How it Happened
With both defenses standing tall for the first 20 minutes of the NE10 matchup, the first scoring opportunity came in the 22nd minute when a Saint Michael's corner kick ricocheted around the box and rocketed off the post before being cleared by the Hawks to keep the match scoreless.
Just 45 seconds later, junior
Camryn Doyle was fouled in the box as a Purple Knights defender collided with her and sent Doyle to the turf, setting up sophomore
Meghan Deneen for a penalty shot, which she buried with her right foot to the bottom left corner of the net to put Saint Anselm ahead 1-0.
Swidorski stood tall on a shot aimed right at her in the center of the box, using two hands to make the grab in the 46th minute.
Jerome nearly scored in the 70th minute with a shot that went just over the fingertips of the Saint Michael's goalie and off the crossbar.
Jerome would find the back of the net in the 72nd minute on a long pass from Schneider that trickled through the Purple Knight's defense, leading Jerome to a one-on-one with the goalie, winning the matchup with a left-footed shot to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Atherton iced the game in the 87th minute with a right-footed shot after receiving a pass from Deneen while streaking down the right side of the pitch, giving Saint Anselm a 3-0 advantage.
Saint Anselm's defense held strong for all 90 minutes en route to its second shutout of the season, led by senior
Nina Cuccovia, who had an excellent performance at left back Tuesday night despite not showing up in the box score.
