Men’s Soccer Shutout by Adelphi, 1-0, in NE10 Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H.  – The Saint Anselm College men's soccer team fell in its Northeast 10 (NE10) opener, 1-0, at Melucci Field against Adelphi University on Saturday.

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm falls to 1-11-0 all-time against Adelphi, having lost 10 straight meetings against the Panthers.
  • This was the first loss of the season for the Hawks, falling to 2-1-3 and 0-1-0 in NE10 play.
  • Adelphi outshot the Hawks 15-7, including a 7-4 edge in shots on net. The Panthers held a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-2.
  • Four different Hawks recorded shots on goal, but Saint Anselm couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Senior goalie David Hood made six saves and gave up one goal as he falls to 2-1-3 on the season.
How it Happened
Hood made the first save of the match in the sixth minute on a shot right at him, and junior Jake McCabe nearly converted on the Hawks' first scoring opportunity of the game, but Andrea Farinella made a diving save to his right for the Panthers.

Hood made an incredible save on a free kick from just steps outside the box, diving to his right and reaching out with his right arm to send the shot wayward to keep the game scoreless in the 20th minute.

Sophomore Chance Prouty made a crafty move in the box and after a nice touch, sent a shot rocketing on net, but it sailed just high of the bar for a goal kick in the 38th minute.

Prouty had another scoring chance turned away by the Adelphi goalie, and Hood made another stellar save in the 61st minute, diving in front of the ball to keep things knotted up, 0-0.

Adelphi scored the lone goal of the game when Lucas Nicolaou made a nice pass to teammate Ryan Holt, who blasted a right-footer past Hood in the 71st minute.
Freshman Zachary Mantegari had a final shot on net with just 10 seconds left but could not convert as the Panthers held on to win, 1-0.
