ALL-TIME SERIES:
Saint Anselm and Seton Hill have met only once before. That meeting came in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, where the Hawks secured a 12-11 victory over the Griffins in overtime for what was their first NCAA postseason win in program history. That game also marked the first-ever NCAA postseason appearance for Saint Anselm. In that contest, the two teams set an NCAA Division II postseason record with 108 combined shots (Saint Anselm 62, Seton Hill 46).
NCAA QUARTERFINAL PREVIEW:
In the NCAA First Round earlier this week, Saint Anselm defeated Bentley for the fourth time this season by a final score of 17-12. Ahead by 8-7 near the midpoint of the third quarter, the Hawks outscored the Falcons by a 9-5 margin down the stretch. The win marked Saint Anselm's second triumph over Bentley in the NCAA First Round in as many years.
Saint Anselm (13-1), making its fifth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance in 2025, is in the Quarterfinals for the third straight year. The Hawks boast the nation's seventh-ranked scoring defense (8.29), while also ranking 12th in fewest turnovers per game (16.29) and 14th in faceoff winning percentage (60.6%). They will be looking to advance to the NCAA Semifinals for the second straight year.
The No. 3 seed in the North Region, Seton Hill (18-1) carries an impressive 16-game winning streak into play on Sunday, hitting the road for the first time in both the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) postseason and the NCAA tournament. The Griffins won the GMAC Championship last Saturday after taking down Walsh (Ohio) by a decisive 20-5 score. In the round prior, Seton Hill defeated Wheeling (W. Va.) by a 25-goal margin.
Last time out against Wilmington (Del.) in the NCAA First Round, the Griffins used a 5-0 fourth quarter to pull away with a 15-7 victory. This year, Seton Hill ranks first in the nation in several offensive categories, including scoring offense (21.21), points per game (34.42), and face-off winning percentage (73.1%). They are outscoring their opponents this spring, 403-101.
Seton Hill was ranked third with 312 points in this week's United States Intercolliegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II national poll, while Saint Anselm was ranked fifth with 284 points.
Sunday's game will be the first time that Saint Anselm has hosted the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Hawks hosted First Round games in each of the last two seasons. The winner of this matchup will take on the winner of No. 1 seed Adelphi (16-1), the defending National Champion, and No. 5 seed Molloy (16-4).
KEY PLAYERS:
This season, Saint Anselm has been led offensively by freshman Matt Lemay (Westminster, Mass.), who was recently named the Northeast-10 Conference (10) Co-Rookie of the Year. He leads the team and ranks fifth in the NE10 with 36 goals, while his 48 points are also a team-high and are tied for seventh-most in the conference. The All-NE10 Second Team selection and four-time Rookie of the Week has recorded 13 straight multi-goal games and enters Sunday's NCAA Quarterfinal matchup with at least three points in six consecutive outings.
Another key piece to the Hawks' offense this year has been senior Will Andrews (Cumberland, R.I.). The midfielder, who received All-NE10 First Team recognition, has 21 goals and six assists this spring. He has been huge down the stretch with three hat tricks in his last four games, including one in the opening round of the NCAA postseason on Wednesday.
Senior Colin Mulvey (Reading, Mass.), an All-NE10 Third Team selection, has been a clutch performer for the Hawks of late. His game-winning goal in overtime of the NE10 Semifinals gave Saint Anselm a dramatic 10-9 win over Bentley. The attacker followed that up with a four-goal game in last weekend's NE10 Championship, where Saint Anselm fell to Adelphi in overtime, 13-12. Those performances helped him earn a spot on the NE10 All-Championship Team. Mulvey has already set single season career-highs with 31 goals and 40 points in just 14 games this year. He enters Sunday's game with 61 career appearances, tied for third-most in team history. He has totaled 114 career points on 78 goals and 36 assists.
Junior Chris Claflin (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Boyle (Reading, Mass.) have been some other solid options offensively for the Hawks in 2025. Claflin, an All-NE10 Second Team pick, is second on the team with 42 points. His 30 assists lead the squad, rank third in the NE10, and are more than double his 2024 total of 12 despite playing in three fewer games. Boyle received All-NE10 Third Team honors this spring. After scoring only two goals as a freshman, he has stepped into a larger role this season. He is currently fourth on the team with 18 goals and ranks sixth on the squad with 24 points out of the midfield.
At the defensive end, the Hawks have been led by sophomore Finn Granara (Reading, Mass.) between the pipes. He has a 7.70 goals-against average on the year, the third-lowest single-season mark in program history. That figure is the second-best in the NE10 and the fifth-best in NCAA Division II. An All-NE10 Second Team selection, Granara has notched 12 wins in 13 starts, which is just one win shy of the single-season record held by CJ Hart '22, who is also from Reading, Mass.
Another impact player for Saint Anselm on the defensive side is junior Colby Goodchild (Reading, Mass.). The All-NE10 First Team short stick defensive midfielder has caused nine turnovers and picked up 23 ground balls this season. Goodchild earned NE10 All-Championship Team honors after logging a pair of caused turnovers and five ground balls in two NE10 postseason games. Last time out against Bentley in the NCAA First Round, he scored his first career goal.
Freshman Johnny Lucas (Peabody, Mass.) is another Hawk who has had a strong rookie season. Starting all 14 games, the All-NE10 Third Team long pole is second on the team with 44 ground balls while also causing eight turnovers. He has helped anchor Saint Anselm's defensive unit that concedes just 8.29 goals per game, the seventh-best figure in the nation. Junior Tyler Vigeant (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Nate Johnson (Reading, Mass.) are tied for the team lead with 15 caused turnovers apiece. The Hawks' defense has taken the fewest penalties (23) of any NE10 program.
Junior Quinn Gannon (Scituate, Mass.), an All-NE10 Second Team selection, has had a breakout season for Saint Anselm at the faceoff position. In his first season as the full-time starter for the Hawks at the X, Gannon has won 140 faceoffs out of 219 attempts, good for a 63.9% success rate. That percentage is the second-best single-season mark in program history. It is also the second-best win rate in the NE10 and ranks 13th nationally. Gannon leads the team and is second in the conference with 92 ground balls as well, which is the fourth-highest total for a single season in team history. His 7.67 ground balls per game are 10th-most in the nation and rank first on the program's single-season leaderboard.
Seton Hill is powered by GMAC Offensive Player of the Year Braedan Lockyer. He leads the Griffins in goals (58), assists (38), and points (96) this season. He ranks ninth in Division II in points per game (5.05) and ranks in the top 20 nationally in both assists per game (2.0) and goals per game (3.05).
Mark Strunk, the GMAC Specialist of the Year, has won 76.7% of his faceoffs this season for Seton Hill — the best mark in Division II and second-best across all three NCAA divisions. He averages 7.79 ground balls per game, which ranks ninth in Division II.
Charlie Hudson was named GMAC Defensive Player of the Year for the Griffins after causing 20 turnovers and collecting 27 ground balls. He has helped the Seton Hill defense concede just 101 goals this season at a rate of just 5.32 per game. Both of those figures lead the nation.
Will Cody earned GMAC Goalie of the Year honors for the second straight season after leading Division II and ranking fourth in all three NCAA divisions with a .627 save percentage. He also tops Division II with a 5.13 goals-against average, the lowest mark across all divisions by a full goal. Cody has allowed just 79 goals in 19 games played while making 133 saves.
HEAD COACHES:
First-year head coach Drew Bourdeau '18 was named NE10 Co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Hawks to an undefeated regular season and the program's first-ever outright regular season title. He became the third head coach in program history to earn that honor, joining Michael Sciamanna (2021) and Rick Senatore (2007). Bourdeau most recently served as the head coach at Bedford High School, leading them to an NHIAA Division I Championship appearance.
As a student-athlete at Saint Anselm, Bourdeau earned USILA All-America Third Team honors as a senior. The two-time All-NE10 selection captained the Hawks and finished his career with the fifth-best average for caused turnovers per game (1.09) at the time. Over 57 career games, he totaled 129 ground balls and 62 caused turnovers.
On the other side, 20-year head coach Brian Novotny earned his fourth GMAC Coach of the Year award after capturing his fourth conference championship, marking the team's eighth straight appearance in the title game. Novotny holds a 205-98 career record and will look to lead the Griffins to their second-ever NCAA Semifinal appearance.
Prior to his time at Seton Hill, Novotny played for the University of Pittsburgh and coached at both Mount Lebanon High School and Franklin Regional High School before taking over the Griffins' program.
