Forbes Leads Women’s Basketball to 84-79 Win in NE10 Opener at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Tatum Forbes scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team to an 84-79 win over Saint Michael's College in its Northeast 10 Conference opener at the Ross Sports Center on Wednesday.
 
Highlights
  • Forbes scored 29 points on an efficient 9-18 shooting from the field, going 1-2 from deep, and 10-12 from the line. She also tallied 10 rebounds and seven assists for her first double-double of the season, the eighth of her career.
  • Saint Anselm is now 62-25 all-time against Saint Michael's, having won 15 of the last 16 meetings.
  • This is the first 5-0 start for the Hawks since the 2019-20 season, when Saint Anselm started 7-0.
  • Junior Meghan Trapper also recorded two career-highs, scoring 17 points on four three-pointers.
  • Senior Anna Nelson matched her career-high for the second game in a row, going 5-9 and 3-6 from deep for 13 points, four rebounds, and one assist.
  • Junior Kaitlin McDonough scored a career-high 14 points, going 6-7 from the free throw line, while flirting with a double-double as she corralled nine rebounds. McDonough also recorded a career-best four steals to go with two blocks.
  • The Hawks outshot the Purple Knights, shooting 27-55 (49.4%) from the floor, 8-18 (44.4%) from long range, and 22-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line. Saint Michael's was held to just 28-72 (38.9%) shooting from the field and a 5-23 (21.7%) mark from deep.
How it Happened
 
Four different Hawks made field goals to start the game as Saint Anselm led 9-2, but Saint Michael's went on a 7-2 run to make the score 11-9. The Purple Knights took their first lead of the game on a free throw that made the score 16-15, and Saint Michael's led by one point at the end of the first, 18-17. Both teams shot 8-14 (57.1%) from the field and had six different players tally points.
 
Forbes opened the quarter with a three-pointer as the Hawks had another strong showing from the floor, going 10-14 (71.4%) from the field. Forbes had 11 points in the quarter while Trapper and Nelson added a three-pointer apiece as Saint Anselm led 41-38 at the half.
 
Trapper began the second half with her third three-pointer of the game and followed it up with a layup to put the Hawks ahead by eight, 46-38. The two teams continued to trade baskets, and a late run for the Purple Knights trimmed the Hawks' lead to four at the end of the third, 59-55.
 
Another long-range basket from Trapper put Saint Anselm back up by seven to start the fourth, leading 62-55. The Hawks led the rest of the way, going 20-25 from the charity stripe in the quarter to secure the win, 84-79.
