Men’s Basketball Falls in Non-Conference Matchup Against Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H.  – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team fell in a non-conference meeting with Southern New Hampshire University, 92-80, at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Saturday.
 
Highlights 
  • This marked the 82nd all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm falls to 42-40 overall against Southern New Hampshire in the series that began in 1977.
  • Saint Anselm falls to 6-2 on the year, marking their first home loss of the season and ending the Hawks' five-game winning streak.
  • Freshman Hayden Johns led the Hawks with a career-high 20 points in 24 minutes off the bench, going 9-14 from the field and 1-1 from deep and from the free throw line.
  • Sophomore Will Davies posted 17 points for his fifth game in double-figures this season, also recording four assists and two rebounds.
  • Sophomore Jovan Ristic scored 10+ points for the sixth game in a row, seventh time overall this season, tallying 11 points with five rebounds and an assist.
  • Junior Jack Medalie had 10 points and four rebounds with a career-high three blocks.
  • Freshman Edward Onyia tallied 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals, going 3-6 from deep for a career-high three makes from deep.
  • The Hawks shot 52.5% (32-61) from the field and 81.8% (9-11) from the free-throw line, but the difference in the game came in three-point shooting as SNHU shot 60% (15-25) from long range.
How it Happened
Southern New Hampshire knocked down five of their first eight shot attempts, including two three-pointers to start the game on a 12-4 run. The Hawks made their next four shots, with Davies sinking a pair of midrange pull-up jumpers to make the score 16-13.
 
Another run for the Penmen with back-to-back threes pushed their lead back up to 11 points, 29-18. Johns scored five straight to reach double-digits in the first half, bringing the Hawks back within six, 29-23.
 
The next six points went to the Penmen, and Jack Hall ended the half 7-7 from three-point range for Southern New Hampshire, leading the Penmen to a 46-38 advantage at the break. Johns scored 10 points, and Davies had nine to lead the Hawks.
 
Southern New Hampshire came out of the gates on fire from deep again, making eight of their first nine shots and five of six from deep to build a 69-48 lead to start the half. The Hawks began to cut into the SNHU lead with a quick 6-0 run, making it a 10-point game, 70-60.
 
A three-pointer from Onyia had the Hawks within single digits, 74-65, but the Penmen responded with the next five points to push their lead back up to 14 points, 79-65, with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
 
SNHU led the rest of the way, winning the cross-town matchup, 92-80.
