FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior
Elise MacNair knocked down the game-winning three-pointer with 25 seconds left as the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team improved to 4-0, defeating Queens University (N.Y.), 71-68, at South Gym in the Hawks' final game of the Knights Thanksgiving Invitational.
Highlights
- MacNair scored a career-high 25 points, capped off by the game-winning shot to increase the Hawks' win streak to four games. MacNair shot 11-17 from the field with three long-range baskets and five rebounds.
- Senior Tatum Forbes filled up the stat sheet, scoring 15 points with nine assists, eight rebounds, and two steals. Forbes leads the conference in scoring at 20.8 points per game and ranks second in assists at 5.5 per contest. Forbes also ranks fourth in the NE10 in rebounding at 7.0 per game.
- Saint Anselm is now 3-0 all-time against Queens, with this being the first matchup between the two teams since 2011.
- This is the first 4-0 start for the Hawks since the 2019-20 season, when Saint Anselm started 7-0.
- Senior Anna Nelson knocked down a trio of three-pointers, scoring a career-high 13 points with two assists, two steals, and one rebound.
- Junior Meghan Trapper scored a season-high 10 points with seven rebounds and two assists.
- There were four ties and 10 lead changes in a closely contested game that saw the Hawks outshoot the Knights, 43.3% (29-67) to 39.7% (29-73).
How it Happened
MacNair scored the first four points of the game and led the Hawks to a 10-2 run to start the contest. MacNair had eight first-quarter points, but Queens ended the frame on an 11-5 run, trailing by just two points, 15-13, heading into the second.
The Knights took their first lead of the game with a 7-2 run to start the second quarter, and they'd increase their lead to as much as eight, 31-23. Forbes scored the final four points of the half to cut the Queens' lead in half at the break, 31-27.
The Knights carried their momentum into the second half, opening with an 8-0 run that had their lead up to 12 points, 39-27. Nelson went on to score the next 11 points for the Hawks with three consecutive triples to pull the Hawks back within five, 43-38. Saint Anselm made it a one-point game heading into the fourth, 51-50, with a strong finish to the quarter on the offensive end.
MacNair opened the fourth with a three to give the Hawks the lead, 53-51, but the Knights responded quickly, retaking the lead 56-53. The two teams went back and forth, trading the lead down the stretch. Forbes hit a baseline jumper and went coast-to-coast for a fastbreak layup to keep the Hawks within reach, 64-63, with under two minutes to go.
After a pair of free throws for the Knights, MacNair tied the game at 66-66 with a corner three. Queens responded with a quick layup, but MacNair drilled another corner three, this time with 25 seconds left to put the Hawks up 69-68. Forbes sealed the win, stealing the ball with three seconds left before making both free throws to secure a 71-68 win for Saint Anselm.
