FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team opened the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season, defeating Molloy University, 63-51, at South Gym on the campus of Queens College in the Hawks' first game of the Knights Thanksgiving Invitational.
Highlights
- Senior Tatum Forbes scored her 1,000th career point, leading the Hawks with 23 points and nine rebounds with three assists, and one steal. Forbes shot 8-13 from the field and went 7-7 from the free-throw line.
- Saint Anselm improves to 2-1 all-time against Molloy, with this being the first meeting since 2006.
- This is the first 3-0 start for the Hawks since the 2019-20 season when Saint Anselm started 7-0.
- Junior Kaitlin McDonough recorded career-highs of 16 rebounds, six blocks, five assists, and two steals.
- Senior Anna Nelson knocked down a team-high three three-pointers, scoring a season-best 11 points with three assists, one steal, and one rebound.
- The Hawks never trailed in the game, outrebounding the Lions 36-34 while turning the ball over 14 times and forcing Molloy into 20 turnovers.
How it Happened
McDonough opened the game with a fastbreak layup after a steal from junior
Meghan Trapper, followed by a pair of Nelson three-pointers to give Saint Anselm a 10-7 lead. A pair of baskets from Forbes gave the Hawks a 16-12 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Forbes was fouled on a three early in the second, knocking down all three chances from the charity stripe, followed by a trapper three as the Hawks' lead grew to five, 22-17. Senior
Brianna James drilled a long-range basket to close out the half with Saint Anselm leading 33-25 at the break.
Forbes scored her 1,000th career point with 4:40 on the clock in the third, sinking a pair of free throws to give the Hawks their first double-digit advantage of the game, 42-32. The final 10 points of the quarter went to Forbes, and Saint Anselm held a 10-point edge, 46-36, heading into the fourth.
The Hawks led by double-digits for the entirety of the quarter, winning the game, 63-51. Sophomore
Elise MacNair paced the Hawks with 10 points in the frame to maintain the Saint Anselm lead.
