Volleyball's Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against D'Youville

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team fell in five sets, 3-2, to D'Youville University in a non-conference contest at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Sunday as the Hawks held their annual Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

D'Youville 3, Saint Anselm 2 (28-30, 17-25, 25-16, 25-22, 10-15)

Highlights
  • This was just the second meeting all-time between Saint Anselm and D'Youville, the previous matchup coming in 2022, with the two programs splitting the series as both matches have been played in Stoutenburgh Gym.
  • Freshman Addison Shelton put together a career day with a match-high and career-high 21 points on 18 kills and three service aces with six digs and a .273 attack percentage. 18 kills is also a season-high for any member of the Hawks this year.
  • Freshman Mckenna O'Connell had 37 assists and nine digs to go with three total blocks, a solo and two assists, three kills, and a service ace.
  • Junior Hollyn Frano came off the bench and recorded nine kills, three digs, and two aces while classmate Sam Pila tallied seven kills, 11 digs, and five total blocks, three solo and two assisted.
  • The Hawks outblocked the Saints 13-8, and aces were knotted up at nine for each team. D'Youville outkilled Saint Anselm 62-46, also leading in assists, 52-43, and digs, 66-58.
How it Happened

SET 1 | Three kills from Shelton propelled Saint Anselm to an early 7-2 lead, but D'Youville used seven kills and two aces to take a one-point edge, 17-16. As the momentum shifted, the Saints built a three-point lead, 22-19, until three errors from D'Youville gave the Hawks a 23-22 advantage. The first set would see-saw back and forth until two consecutive scores from the Saints gave D'Youville the win, 30-28.

SET 2 | After the Hawks took a 1-0 lead on a Frano kill, the Saints carried their momentum into the second set, leading the rest of the way to take a 2-0 match lead, winning the second, 25-17.

SET 3 | There were six lead changes early on in the third, and with D'Youville leading 10-8, the Hawks' offense came alive as Shelton and Frano sparked an 8-0 run to make the score 16-10. D'Youville continued to scuffle with multiple attack errors until Shelton put the set away with back-to-back kills as the Hawks won, 25-16.

SET 4 | Despite taking an early 3-0 advantage, the Hawks let the Saints come back and tie things at six apiece, until a kill from freshman Peyton Elward ignited a 10-3 run that gave Saint Anselm a 16-9 edge. D'Youville made a late push to make it a two-point game, 24-22, but a service error gave the Hawks the set win, 25-22.

SET 5 | In the decisive fifth set, the Saints took a 2-0 lead off two kills from Maddie Boglev, but the Hawks would tie the score twice, 2-2, and 3-3. D'Youville then scored four of the next five points and would lead the rest of the way, winning the set and the match, 15-10.
