Softball Suffers Pair of Tight Losses on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONGWOOD, Fla. – On Friday afternoon, the Saint Anselm College softball team opened the 2024 season with a pair of losses against Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) and Barry University (Fla.) at the Florida Tech Panther Invitational. Sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) highlighted with a three-run home run, the first of her career, during the first game.

  • Saint Anselm is set for another two games on Saturday, February 10th against Chadron State College (Neb.) and Florida Tech.

GAME 1 (AUBURN):
  • Freshman Sam Ryan (Tewksbury, Mass.), making her collegiate debut in the circle for Saint Anselm, struck out her first two batters in the bottom of the first inning. The Warhawks, however, took an early 1-0 lead after Chloe Baynes tagged home off a wild pitch. Auburn added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to make it a 3-0 game.
  • Later on, junior Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.) singled through the 5-6 hole for the first Hawks hit of the afternoon. In the bottom of the third, Auburn's Lexi Love earned an RBI after flying out to right field to score another run for the Warhawks and make it 4-0. 
  • Saint Anselm's bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning with junior Julia Howse (North Reading, Mass.) getting on base with a single. After senior Hannah Ramer (Rehoboth, Mass.) walked to put two Hawks on base, sophomore Rose Reitmeyer (Oxford, Conn.) smashed a three-run homer, the first of her career, to narrow the score to 4-3. 
  • Auburn answered in the fifth inning by posting four runs off five hits, including a triple by Gia Martin, to extend their lead to 8-3. The Warhawks sealed their 10-3 victory by adding two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Auburn at Montgomery finished the game with 10 runs on 11 hits and three errors, while Saint Anselm ended with three runs on six hits and committed five errors.
  • Despite the loss, Ryan. struck out seven batters in her collegiate debut.
  • Six different Hawks had one hit, including Reitmeyer who homered and drove in three runs.
  • This marked the first ever meeting between these two programs.

GAME 2 (BARRY):
  • After senior Haile Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) pitched out of a couple of jams in the first two innings, freshman Brooke Tardguno (Metheun, Mass.) drove in the first run of her career on a single up the middle that scored junior Sam Wiberg (Exeter, N.H.) to give Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. However, the Hawks stranded three runners on base after a ground out ended the inning.
  • Hicks once again showed her composure in the fourth inning, forcing two ground outs with the bases loaded to keep her team in front by a run.
  • Harper Bunn hit a leadoff triple for Barry in the top of the fifth and scored after a fielding error on the next play to tie the score up at 1-1. Neither team was able to score in the sixth or seventh innings and the game went to extras.
  • With one out in the top of the eighth and runners on second and third, the Buccaneers took the lead on a sacrifice fly to right field. The Hawks could not get a baserunner in the bottom half of the eight and ultimately fell, 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Barry recorded eight hits in the game, while Saint Anselm had three. The Buccaneers left 11 runners on base compared to four baserunners stranded by the Hawks.
  • Hicks tossed a complete game for the Hawks on 140 pitches, 83 of which were strikes, while giving up just one earned run. The senior struck out three and walked five in the loss.
  • Brooke Tardugno went 1-3 with a single and drove in the only run of the game for Saint Anselm, while Wiberg also went 1-3 with a single.
  • Alexis Martin came on in relief for Barry and tossed three innings with no walks, hits or runs allowed.
  • This is the third all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm falls to 0-3 overall against Barry.
