PREVIEW: Softball set for eight games in five-day stretch

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team is scheduled to play four doubleheaders in five days, opening with a non-conference battle against Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, Mar. 22.

The Hawks will then battle Jefferson University on Thursday, Mar. 23 before opening Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, Mar. 25 at Adelphi University and at Pace University the following day.

Saint Anselm last played on Mar. 6 in a doubleheader from The Spring Games in Claremont, Fla., taking game one over Wayne State by a 15-1 score before falling to Bemidji State, 4-3, to close the Florida trip. The Hawks enter the week with a 9-5 record and will make their home debut on Saturday, Apr. 1 when Le Moyne comes to the South Athletic Fields.

Saint Thomas Aquinas dropped a pair of games to Le Moyne and Salem (W.V.) to close a trip to Leesburg, Fla. on Mar. 16. The Spartans drop to 6-6 on the season and will head to Felician on Sunday, Mar. 26 following the twinbill with the Hawks.

Jefferson suffered a pair of losses at Molloy on Mar. 19, marking its most recent games played. The team sits at 5-7 on the season and will play Alliance on Tuesday, Mar. 21 in its Central Athletic Collegiate Conference opener before hosting the Hawks.

Adelphi took both games of a doubleheader against Queens on Mar. 16, improving to 10-3 on the season. The team will host Mercy on Tuesday, Mar. 21 and head to Felician on Thursday, Mar. 23 before the NE10 opener against Saint Anselm.

Pace split a doubleheader at Biola on Mar. 16 which pushed the team to 4-8 on the season. Before hosting Saint Anselm, the Setters host Dominican (N.Y.), Georgian Court, and Southern New Hampshire. The doubleheader with the Penmen will be Pace's NE10 opener.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Gracie O'Hara (Shrewsbury, Mass.) leads the Hawks with a .436 batting average with sophomore Ava Caputo (Waterford, N.Y.) following closely at .425. The duo is tied for the team lead with 17 hits apiece.
  • O'Hara and sophomore Alyssa Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) have slugged two home runs each, leading a Hawks roster who has hit eight homers this season.
  • O'Hara also leads the squad with 15 runs batted in and nine runs scored this season.
  • Senior Kylie Fitzpatrick (Danville, N.H.), senior Meghan Gibbons (Litchfield, N.H.), sophomore Stephanie Tardugno (Methuen, Mass.), and Wironen all have double-digit hits this season.
  • Junior Halie Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) owns a 7-0 record from the pitching circle this season. Hicks has a 0.73 earned-run average in 48.0 innings pitched. The junior has fanned 54 batters through eight appearances in 2023.
  • Compared to the rest of the NE10, Hicks is second in earned-run average, tied for first in wins, and is third in strikeouts.
  • The Hawks defense is operating at a 0.940 fielding percentage this season, committing 22 errors in 367 chances.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
  • Saint Thomas Aquinas posted a 28-21 overall record and a 19-5 record in East Coast Conference play last spring. The team saw its season come to a close with a loss to Molloy in the elimination bracket of the conference tournament.
  • Sarah Williams and Elyse Marcano are tied for the Spartans lead with 12 hits apiece. Williams has a .414 batting average this season which is a team-high.
  • Carissa Della Vecchia and Abbie Landrum have started six and five games apiece for Saint Thomas Aquinas this season. Della Vecchia is 4-2 with a 1.49 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched while Landrum has a 2.02 ERA in 34.2 innings of work.
  • Jefferson posted a 12-24 record in 2022 with an 11-13 mark in CACC play. The team split a doubleheader on Apr. 30, 2022 against Holy Family in its regular season finale.
  • Julia Heine and Sam Gomez are tied for the Rams lead with 10 hits each through 12 games this season. The duo is also tied for the top spot on the roster with seven runs batted in each.
  • Angelina Sherba and Gianna DeLorenzo have started four games each from the rubber for the Rams. Each student-athlete has posted 28.1 innings pitched with Sherba posting a 1.73 ERA and DeLorenzo registering a 1.98.
  • Adelphi was 47-15 with a 22-4 record in conference play in 2022. The Panthers claimed the NE10 Championship and later advanced to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship after winning the East Regional and the East Super Regional.
  • Courtney Wengryn leads the Panthers with 21 hits in 43 at-bats, good for a .488 batting average. Six other Panthers have recorded double-digit hits through 14 games this season.
  • Lindsey Hibbs has started eight games from the pitching circle for Adelphi, totaling 53.2 innings pitched. Hibbs owns a 0.91 ERA. Claire Fon has drawn four starts and made seven appearances. Fon has a 2.00 ERA in 28.0 innings pitched.
  • Pace fell to Adelphi in the NCAA East Regional on May 13, 2022, seeing its season come to a close at 28-21 overall and 14-12 in NE10 play.
  • Kaylee Matsuda is the lone student-athlete for the Setters with double-digit hits as she has recorded 13 through 12 games. Brianna Shea is the team leader with seven runs batted in this season.
  • Anna Acevedo leads the pitching staff with a 2.57 ERA in five starts. Giselle Garcia has drawn six starts and owns a 3.05 ERA in 39.0 innings pitched.
ALL-TIME vs. THE OPPOSITION
  • The Hawks and Spartans have met five times in the all-time series. Saint Anselm is 4-1 against Saint Thomas Aquinas and took the most recent meeting by a 3-1 score on Mar. 13, 2022
  • Saint Anselm and Jefferson have played just one time entering 2023. The Rams grabbed a 2-1 win over the Hawks on Mar. 8, 2019.
  • The Hawks and Panthers have met 24 times in the all-time series. Adelphi holds a 13-10-1 advantage over Saint Anselm. The sides played four times in 2022 including in the NE10 Championship and the NCAA East Regional. All four matchups went to Adelphi and were decided by two runs or less.
  • Saint Anselm and Pace have battled 40 times in softball with the Hawks holding a 21-19 edge in the series. The Hawks swept a regular season doubleheader by 8-5 and 8-7 scores on Mar. 27, 2022.
