PREVIEW: Women's ice hockey meets Stonehill in NEWHA Semifinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The second-seeded Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team will host the third-seeded Stonehill College on Wednesday, Mar. 1 in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Semifinals.

The opening puck drop in the contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start from Sullivan Arena. Tickets will be available upon entry to Sullivan Arena. Prices for the tickets will be $5 for students with college ID, senior citizens, and children. Tickets for adults will be $10.

The Hawks advanced to the NEWHA Semifinals after downing the seventh-seed, Saint Michael's College, two games to one. The Purple Knights took game one on Feb. 24 by a 4-3 score before the Hawks forced a winner-take-all game three after registering an 8-0 win on Feb. 25. Sophomore Audrey Jackson (Shoreview, Minn.) netted the overtime game-winner on Feb. 26 to send the Hawks into the semifinals.

The Skyhawks downed the sixth-seed Post University, winning their series, 2-0. Stonehill registered a 7-1 win on Feb. 24 before clinching the series with a 4-3 win in double overtime on Feb. 25. The Skyhawks improved to 19-15-2 on the season with the pair of wins in their first season of competition.

The winner of this semifinal will advance to the NEWHA Championship game against the winner of the top-seeded Long Island University and the fourth-seed Franklin Pierce University. The Championship game is slated for Saturday, Mar. 4 at the highest-remaining seed from the semifinal games.

HAWKS NOTES
  • Junior Maddy McCaffery (Weymouth, Mass.) led the Hawks with six points in the three-game series with the Purple Knights, scoring two goals and adding four assists. Senior Margaret Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.), junior Claire Weber (Marshfield, Mass.), and freshman Brooklyn Pancoast (Helena, Mont.) all netted two goals in the series.
  • Graduate student Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) was named the NEWHA Player of the Year on Friday. Golini has 43 points on the season, which is second in the league and is tied for a program record for points in a single season. Golini ranks fourth in the NEWHA in goals with 18 while leading with 25 helpers.
  • Junior Natalie Tulchinsky (Clifton Park, N.Y.) is third in the league with 41 points, coming from 19 goals and 22 helpers. Sophomore Tyra Turner (Andover, Minn.) has scored 19 goals and assisted on 19 others for 38 points. Tulchinsky and Turner both collected All-NEWHA Second Team honors.
  • Tulchinsky and Golini became just the second pair of Saint Anselm student-athletes to have 40 or more points in a single season. The last time that feat was reached was in the 2012-13 season.
  • Jackson, the overtime hero on Sunday, has 31 points on the season from 11 goals and 20 assists.
  • Pancoast, who collected All-Rookie Team honors from the NEWHA, has scored 14 goals and assisted on nine others for 23 points this season.
  • Senior Gabrielle Huson (Edina, Minn.) also grabbed All-NEWHA Second Team honors on Friday. The co-captain scored the equalizer on the power play in Sunday's win and now has 12 points on three goals and nine assists in 2022-23.
  • Senior Allie Kelley (East Berne, N.Y.) leads all of the National Collegiate level in saves, totaling 1,115 this season. Kelley has started in 35 games and holds a 2.98 goals-against average and a 0.913 save percentage.
  • In the last six games, the Hawks power play has netted five goals which has brought the team to a 16.9% conversion rate with the extra skater. Saint Anselm has scored 23 goals in 136 power play chances this season. The penalty kill sits at 79.2% after killing off 114-of-144 times shorthanded in 2022-23.
SCOUTING STONEHILL
  • Alexis Petford, the NEWHA Rookie of the Year and First Team selection, currently leads the league with 46 points, coming from a league-high 27 goals and 19 assists, which are tied for fourth in the NEWHA.
  • Paige Whaley and Bailey Feeney are second and third on the team with 26 and 20 points each respectively. Whaley is tied for second on the team with Lily Geist at 12 goals each while ranking third in assists (14). Feeney has four goals and is second on the team with 16 helpers.
  • Katie Sonntag and Maddison Achtyl are tied for fourth on the team with 10 goals apiece.
  • Maeve Carey was named to the All-NEWHA Second Team. She has five goals and 10 assists this season.
  • Petford and Sydney Russell collected All-Rookie Team honors this season.
  • Hanna Zukow has started in 24 games for the Skyhawks in the goal. She is 12-10-2 with a 2.50 goals-against average and a 0.915 save percentage. Zukow ranks fifth in the NEWHA in both goals-against average and save percentage.
  • The Stonehill power play has netted 25 goals in 125 chances, good for a 20.0% conversion rate. The team has been shorthanded on 157 occasions and owns an 83.4% penalty kill rate, having allowed 26 goals in those scenarios.
ALL-TIME, NEWHA POSTSEASON
  • Saint Anselm has qualified for each of the four NEWHA Championship games in league history, the only program in the league to accomplish that feat.
  • The Hawks captured the league crown in the 2018-19 season, marking their lone NEWHA title.
  • The women's ice hockey program is now 9-4-0 all-time in the NEWHA postseason. Saint Anselm will be making its fifth consecutive appearance in the league semifinals.
ALL-TIME vs. STONEHILL
  • The programs will be meeting for the fifth time this season and the fifth time, all-time. Saint Anselm took three-of-four games during the regular season.
  • The first meeting in the series came on Nov. 4 from Sullivan Arena, which went to the Hawks by a 4-3 score in overtime. Saint Anselm registered a 3-1 win the following afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass.
  • Saint Anselm extended its winning streak against Stonehill to three games with a 5-3 win on Jan. 20 before Stonehill grabbed its first win over the Hawks on Jan. 21 by an 8-3 score, marking the most recent meeting between the squads.
  • This will be the first meeting in the league postseason tournament between the Hawks and Skyhawks.
