PREVIEW: Women's lacrosse set to open the 2023 season

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team opens its 2023 season at American International in non-conference play on Saturday, Feb. 18 before opening its home slate on Tuesday, Feb. 21 against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The Hawks closed the 2022 season with a 7-9 overall record and a 5-8 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play, just missing out on the eight-team postseason bracket. Following the pair of non-conference games to open the 2023 season, Saint Anselm will battle D'Youville in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, Feb. 25 in the first all-time meeting between the two programs.

The Yellow Jackets went 3-13 on the season in 2022 with a 1-12 mark in NE10 battles. Following the season opening battle with the Hawks, American International will host Caldwell on Saturday, Feb. 25 in the second of four-consecutive home games to open the 2023 season.

The Mountain Lions fell in the First Round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament, dropping them to 11-7 overall. The team posted an 8-4 record in conference games in just their sixth season of competition. Following the season opening battle on the Hilltop, the Mountain Lions will stay in the New England region and battle Franklin Pierce on Thursday, Feb. 23.

HAWKS NOTES
  • The Hawks opened the season receiving votes in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division II Preseason Poll. Saint Anselm was projected to finish eighth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, totaling 78 points and finishing just behind crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire for seventh.
  • Saint Anselm returns 20 student-athletes from last season's roster and sits at 33 entering the 2023 season. Seniors Taylor Cobain (East Greenwich, R.I.), Meghan Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.), Lexi Palmisano (Woburn, Mass.), and junior Erin Doyle (Weymouth, Mass.) were named team captains in December.
  • Palmisano returns as the team's top goal scorer from last season, totaling 45 goals. Palmisano added one assist, bringing her to 46 points on the season which was third most on the roster.
  • Junior Jess Sullivan (Wrentham, Mass.) scored 34 goals and assisted on 19 others for 53 points, making her the top returning point-getter from the 2022 season.
  • Cobain and junior Alison Ferullo (North Andover, Mass.) ranked fifth and sixth on the roster last season with 30 points and 29 points each respectively.
  • Doyle collected 28 ground balls, second most on the squad, and caused 15 turnovers, also second most on the team in 2022.
  • Palmisano led the Hawks with 67 draw controls while Cotraro totaled 31 which was good for third.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) saw time in three games in her first season competing at the collegiate level. Driscoll made six saves on seven shots on goal, good for a 0.857 save percentage.
SCOUTING AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
  • The Yellow Jackets were selected to finish 13th in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, totaling 18 points.
  • American International returns 16 student-athletes from last season's roster and sits at 19 entering the 2023 season.
  • Antonella Mikolyuk posted 38 points for the Yellow Jackets, coming from 23 points and 15 assists. Those ranked second and first on the team last season.
  • Liz Day and Kathryn Moody were second and third on the roster with 35 and 32 points apiece. Day scored 21 goals and assisted on 14 others while Moody led the team with 29 goals and assisted on three.
  • Lauren Smithers scooped up 22 ground balls while Mikolyuk earned a team-high 97 draw controls. Marissa Feary caused a team-high 20 turnovers.
  • Marissa Long appeared in eight games for American International last season and totaled 27 saves, good for a 0.450 save percentage.
SCOUTING UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO-COLORADO SPRINGS
  • The Mountain Lions return 14 student-athletes from last season's roster and sit at 27 for the 2023 schedule.
  • The team was selected third in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, totaling 18 points following its most successful season in program history.
  • Julia Patrick was one of three student-athletes to reach 50 points last season and returns as the team's top point scorer with 51 points. Patrick netted 37 goals, tied for second most on the team, and added 14 assists.
  • Angela Naughton totaled 24 points on 15 goals and nine assists while Annalise Carr posted 20 points on nine goals and 11 helpers.
  • Madison McGriff led the team with 42 ground balls from the goal. McGriff started in 16 games for the Mountain Lions and totaled 138 saves, good for a 0.465 save percentage and an 11.01 goals-against average.
ALL-TIME vs. AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO-COLORADO SPRINGS
  • The Hawks and Yellow Jackets will be battling for the 24th time in program history on Saturday. Saint Anselm enjoys a 21-2 record against American International all-time.
  • The programs last met on Mar. 26, 2022 in Springfield, Mass. with the Hawks coming away with a 19-7 win.
  • Saint Anselm and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs are meeting for the first time in program history.
