Women's golf closes first event with a fifth-place finish

CICERO, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's golf team concluded its official varsity debut with a fifth-place finish in the Le Moyne Invitational.

The Hawks posted a team score of 147-over par across the two days at the Lake Shore Yacht & Country Club in Cicero, N.Y. On day two, Saint Anselm was 65-over, finishing 17 shots better than the team's day one score.

Adelphi University and Dominican (N.Y.) College closed the event in a tie for the top spot at 89-over. The hosts, Le Moyne, were third with a score of 95-over just ahead of Assumption who was fourth at 118-over.

Erika Fuentes from the College of Saint Rose finished first on the individual leaderboard after carding a 75 on day one and a 74 on the second day, good for a combined score of five-over.

Saint Anselm will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 25 and Monday, Sept. 26 from the Franklin Pierce University Women's Fall Invitational from Hudson, N.H. at Green Meadows, The Prairie.

Sophomore Nicole Butkus (North Hampton, N.H.) carded her first career round under 80 as she turned in a seven-over 79 which was good for a tie for fifth on the day. Butkus finished as the Hawks top placer in a tie for 12th at 25-over. Butkus improved nine places between each round which was tied for the most on the day. The sophomore was tied for 11th in the tournament in par-four scoring at 11-over, averaging 4.69 strokes per par-four. She also played the par-fives at four-over which was tied for sixth best in the field.

Freshman Alora Assad (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was tied for 14th at the event as she posted an 86 on day two to finish her first collegiate event at 26-over. Assad posted the top score for the Hawks on day one and followed it up with the second best score for the Hawks on day two. Assad carded 15 pars across both days of the invitational and led Saint Anselm in par-three scoring at six-over, averaging 3.60 strokes per par-three played.

Improving upon day one by five strokes, freshman Lydia Tufts (Auburn, N.H.) posted the third-best score for the Hawks on Sunday with an 87. Tufts finished the event at 35-over which put her in a tie for 25th in the field. Tufts turned in 12 pars between the two rounds and was tied with Butkus at 11-over in par-four scoring.

Senior Annabelle Smith (Paxton, Mass.) turned in a 101 on day two, besting her day one score by three strokes. Smith finished the event at 61-over which was good for a 38th place finish on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Abby McGonigle (Braintree, Mass.) rounded out the Hawks competitors with a 118 on day two. McGonigle closed the event at 88-over which was good for a 40th place finish.

All five Saint Anselm student-athletes made their collegiate debuts at the Le Moyne Invitational.
