PREVIEW: Women's basketball hosts American Int'l on Tuesday

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 11, welcoming American International College to the Hilltop for a 5:30 p.m. showdown in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Saint Anselm, the No. 8 team in the East Region (D2SIDA Regional Media Poll) takes to the court for the first time in 2022 – three of the team's last four games have been postponed. Last time out on Thursday, Dec. 30, the Hawks eased past Saint Michael's by a 67-44 margin in Vermont – in the last five games, the Hawks are 4-1 with the only loss coming at nationally-ranked USciences.

American International carries a 5-5 record into play on Tuesday, having lost two games in a row entering the day. The Yellow Jackets have lost each of their three games played at home, but own an impressive 4-2 road record that includes three consecutive wins away from Butova Gymnasium. Five of the team's last seven games have been canceled or postponed.

Fans attending Tuesday's game are expected to mind the College's COVID-19 Fan Guidelines.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Ahead by just three points through the first quarter of action, Saint Anselm put the game against Saint Michael's out of reach with a 15-0 scoring stretch to open the second stanza. The Hawks ended the first half on a 9-0 run, building a 42-20 lead at the break. In total, Saint Anselm outscored Saint Michael's by a 24-5 margin in the second quarter on the way to the victory.
  • Sophomore Gabby Turco (Wildwood, N.J.) led the way for Saint Anselm against the Purple Knights with 19 points and 11 rebounds, recording her first career double-double. Junior McKenzy Ouellette (West Newfield, Maine) put home 10 points with a career-high four steals and four rebounds. Sophomore Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) posted six points, also a career-high.
  • Freshman Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) produced eight points and as many rebounds while senior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) logged 12 points with six rebounds. Senior Macy Spinks (Luton, England) matched Steinman and Turco with four assists, ending the afternoon with seven points of her own.
  • Across 101 career games at Saint Anselm, Steinman ranks eighth all-time in team history with 1,442 career points. Her 14.3 points per game ranks sixth all-time among student-athletes to have played in at least 50 career games on the Hilltop. Steinman holds the team's all-time record in free throws made (405), setting it earlier this season by passing Addie Stiles '99 and her 381 makes from 1995-99.
  • Steinman is one of just two student-athletes in Saint Anselm history with at least 1,400 points, 600 rebounds and 250 assists (Candace Andrews '17).
  • Saint Anselm has tied or won the rebounding battle in each of the last four games after opening the year with a negative rebounding differential (-30). Four members of the Hawks roster have at least four rebounds per contest.

YELLOW JACKETS PREVIEW

  • Since picking up a 66-54 win at New Haven on Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Yellow Jackets have logged back-to-back losses against Post and Le Moyne at home. Across the team's last five games, AIC has committed 99 turnovers for an average of 19.8 per game.
  • The Yellow Jackets have lost the rebounding battle in each of those last two losses, giving up 50 and 52 rebounds, respectively, to Post and Le Moyne. American International has hauled in no more than 33 rebounds in either of those two contests.
  • Destine Perry leads the NE10 with a 42.6% three-point field goal percentage and is fourth with 2.3 three-point baskets per contest. She is averaging 14.1 points per game, leading her team and ranking 14th in the NE10.
  • Kayla Robinson is making just shy of 75% of her free throws on the season (74.4%), ranking 11th in the NE10.
  • Perry had a well-rounded stat line against Le Moyne, scoring 24 points with four rebounds and three assists. Rosa Vreugd scored eight points and two rebounds.

ALL-TIME vs. AMERICAN INT'L

  • Saint Anselm is 36-32 against American International in the all-time series that dates back to Feb. 12, 1981.
  • The Hawks won 19 of the first 21 meetings between both programs but then lost 15 in a row to AIC from Dec. 11, 2003 through Jan. 31, 2015.
  • Saint Anselm has won each of the last six games against AIC, including a 69-47 result for the Hawks on Jan. 14, 2020.
