PREVIEW: Women's tennis to play three matches in four days

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team begins a stretch of three matches in four days on Thursday. The Hawks will battle Plymouth State University at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of the Holderness School.

Saint Anselm is in search of its first victory of the 2021-22 campaign, having dropped each of its first three matches of the year to stiff competition. So far, the Hawks have played the 2021 NCAA Division II East Region Champions (Franklin Pierce), the East Region runner-up (Stonehill) and the University of New Haven.

The Hawks will play opponents across NCAA Divisions I, II and III across the next four days. After taking on Division III Plymouth State on Thursday, Saint Anselm tangles with Division I Holy Cross on Saturday. The stretch of games concludes on Sunday with a Northeast-10 Conference match with Assumption.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • The Hawks have not won a game across three matches so far this fall. Senior Emily Jacy (Glastonbury, Conn.) is the active leader with 11 singles victories with junior Anastasia Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine) has eight singles wins to her credit.
  • Saint Anselm debuted at the Derryfield School tennis courts on Sunday against New Haven. The recently-constructed courts will be the new competition venue for the program.
  • Kapothanasis and Jacy have played each of their three matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Freshman Julia Svor (Lewiston, Maine) has lined up for the Hawks at No. 3 singles while classmate Bridget Hughes (Rockland, Mass.), the sister of women's tennis alum Kaitlin Hughes '20, is slotted into the No. 4 singles position.
  • Freshmen Elle Doucette (Newburyport, Mass.) and Abigail Svor (Lewiston, Maine) round out the Hawks lineup at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
  • Hughes and Jacy compete for the Hawks at No. 1 doubles while the tandem of Kapothanasis and freshman Olivia Parzick (Bow, N.H.) take to the court at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Julia Casaletto (Rowley, Mass.) pairs up with Julia Svor at No. 3 doubles for Saint Anselm.

PROJECTING PLYMOUTH STATE

  • The Panthers own a 2-0 record so far this season, taking down Husson and Salem State to date by 6-3 scores. Thursday's match against Saint Anselm is the team's first home match of the season.
  • Maggie McCarthy, a recent graduate of Plymouth State, was the owner of a 5-3 record at No. 1 singles last year and was followed by fall 2021 returner Kira Winter and her dominant 7-1 record at No. 2 singles this past spring.
  • During the spring 2021 semester, Plymouth State logged a 7-3 overall record. The Panthers fell to Rhode Island College in the Little East Championship on May 9. Their opening-round postseason victory was a 5-0 defeat of Castleton on campus.
  • Barbara Rawlsky-Willett is in the midst of her 18th season as the Head Coach of the Panthers program. She owns a career record of 134-94 (.588) since joining the program in 2004.

HOLY CROSS NOTES

  • Earlier this season, Holy Cross hosted a doubles invitational that served Saint Anselm as a warm-up to the regular season of competition. The Hawks will return to Worcester, Mass. for the second time this month on Saturday.
  • The Crusaders play a mixed schedule of NCAA Division I, II and III programs. The team takes on Mount Holyoke on Thursday, Sept. 16 before welcoming the Hawks to campus on Saturday.
  • Holy Cross opened its year at the Union (N.Y.) Invitational this past weekend. Freshman Caroline Fredey won the D singles flight after posting a 3-0 record in singles action.
  • Head Coach Mike Lucas is in his 18th season as the Head Coach of the Crusaders women's tennis program. Lucas' best season came in 2002-03, when he piloted Holy Cross to a program-best 18-2 overall record and the school's first-ever New England Championship.

TAKING A LOOK AT ASSUMPTION

  • The Greyhounds own a 1-1 record so far in 2021-22, downing Saint Michael's on Sunday, Sept. 12 before losing to Bentley last time out on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The match against Bentley was a narrow 4-3 defeat while Assumption easily handled the Purple Knights, 6-1.
  • Versus the Falcons, Assumption earned the doubles point but came out on the losing end in singles play. Two of the matches in singles play went three sets, both of them won by Bentley.
  • The Greyhounds have three seniors, one junior, three sophomores and three freshmen on the roster. Senior Julia Chappell is a native of Manchester, N.H. – she attended Manchester Central High School.

ALL TIME vs. THE OPPOSITION

  • Saint Anselm is 21-7 in the all-time series against Plymouth State that dates back to Oct. 3, 1981. The Hawks have won 14 of the last 15 matches against the Panthers since Oct. 5, 1994.
  • The Hawks are in search of their first-ever win against Holy Cross, having dropped all 14 fixtures to the Crusaders. The all-time series began on Sept. 18, 1980 and last time out, the Hawks dropped a narrow 4-3 result to the Crusaders on Sept. 13, 2019.
  • Saint Anselm is 24-20 against Assumption in program history. The Hawks are mired in a 10-match losing streak to the Greyhounds, most recently losing to Assumption by a 6-1 margin on Apr. 21, 2021.
