MANCHESTER, N.H. – Griffin Shoemaker '21, a recent graduate of Saint Anselm College and a member of its nationally-ranked men's lacrosse team, was announced as the recipient of the Charles J. Quinn Male Sportsmanship Award on Tuesday.
Voted on by members of the Department of Athletics at Saint Anselm, the Charles J. Quinn Sportsmanship Award recognizes both male and female student-athlete who best exemplifies and demonstrates the values of sportsmanship on and off the playing surface. The female award winner will be revealed on Wednesday.
With Shoemaker's leadership, Saint Anselm posted a 13-2 overall record and was ranked as high as No. 8 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's National Coaches' Poll. The Hawks played for a Northeast-10 Conference postseason championship for just the second time (2018, 2021) and claimed the team's first Northeast Division Regular Season Championship with an unblemished 10-0 record.
"Griffin is a great young man who shows up every day with a positive attitude," said Head Coach Michael Sciamanna. "He is respected by his teammates, who voted him as a captain for his senior year. No matter what the situation, he is always positive and there to support his teammates. He is a special young man who is everything we want in our student-athletes, both on and off the field."
A team co-captain, Shoemaker recorded 25 goals as a senior alongside 12 assists for 37 points (25-12=37). Scoring a single-game high of six points on three occasions in 2021, he notched five goals against Saint Michael's on Apr. 3 and set career-high marks in virtually every offensive and defensive statistic. His 49 ground balls in 2021 ranked second on the team behind only the squad's face-off specialist.
Across 45 career games, Shoemaker scored 53 goals with 21 assists for 74 points (53-21=74). Committing just two career penalties totaling 90 seconds, he burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2018, scoring 17 goals with eight assists for 25 points (17-8=25) in his first season, helping Saint Anselm to an NE10 championship game appearance for the first time in team history.
The Computer Science major is a repeat Dean's List selection at Saint Anselm who recently secured New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-Academic Team placement. Additionally, Shoemaker has also won Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction on many occasions from the NE10 and serves the campus community as a New Student Orientation Leader.
"He has gone out of his way to welcome all of the new student-athletes to our team every year and has helped to create a culture where the players support each other through all the ups and downs of being a student-athlete," said Sciamanna.
On the field, he earned All-America honors this season from USA Lacrosse Magazine, Second Team North All-Region honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, First Team All-Region from the NEILA, and First Team All-Conference plaudits from the NE10. He began his career as an All-Rookie Team honoree for Saint Anselm in 2018.
John Femia '21 of the Saint Anselm men's ice hockey team was the other nominee for the award.
