NORTH EAST, Pa. – Sophomore
Drew Semons (Danvers, Mass.) finished the final round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Tournament in a tie for 32nd place at the Lake View Country Club after shooting a four-over 76.
Semons moved up the leaderboard on the final day, improving 12 spots from Friday where he was tied for 46th in the crowded field. Semons carded three birdies and nine pars on the day.
He wrapped up the three-day tournament with a 236 score, shooting a 79 on the opening day, 81 on Friday, and a 75 in the final round.
Semons started off hot with four straight pars in his first four holes off the front nine. He posted a red number on the par-four fifth hole by recording a birdie. On the fifth, Semons striped a drive down the middle of the 402-yard fifth and then got it within four feet of the pin from around 140 yards away. He would birdie the par-five sixth hole, making a downhill 30-feet putt.
He would double bogey the next hole to fall back to even par. He would hold onto even par to end the front nine, posting an even 36 on the opening nine.
After an approximately 30-minute wait to tee off the back nine, Semons got off on the wrong foot on the par-four 10th, dropping a stroke with a bogey. He would regain that stroke with a birdie on the par-four 404-yard 11th hole, knocking a 161-yard shot inside three feet and then eventually sinking the putt to bring him back to even par through 11 holes.
Semons would struggle across the next few holes, recording three straight bogeys before paring the last three out of four holes to close with a four-over 40 on the back nine.
He finished the three day championship with a 4.23 average on the par-fours.
Gannon, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Davis & Elkins, and Fayetteville State secured spots in the upcoming NCAA Division II Championship as the top four teams in the regional. Bentley tied Fayetteville State with a 932 score after the full 54-holes, which put the fourth spot down to a playoff. Fayetteville State was able to win the playoff to send themselves to nationals over Bentley.
