PREVIEW: Women's basketball to take on No. 8 Adelphi in NE10 Semifinals

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team will head to Adelphi University on Thursday, Mar. 5 to compete in the Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals at 7 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.

Saint Anselm (20-6, 15-4 NE10), reaching 20 victories for the second consecutive season, posted a 55-44 victory over the University of New Haven on Sunday in the NE10 Quarterfinals. The Hawks, seeded second in the Northeast Division, will battle Adelphi, the top-seeded squad from the Southwest Division, with a berth in the NE10 title game on the line.

The Hawks are in search of their first appearance in the NE10 championship game since the 1998-99 season. Saint Anselm has moved on to the title bout six times before, winning its lone NE10 championship in 1991, defeating Bentley by an 81-76 margin.

Adelphi, the No. 8-ranked team in NCAA Division II, has sprinted out to a 27-2 overall record this season, losing only to Stonehill and Saint Anselm in a two-game stretch from Jan. 14 to Jan. 18. The Panthers have since won 11 games in a row, entering play on Thursday following an 81-55 victory over Southern New Hampshire in the Quarterfinals on Sunday.

TICKET INFORMATION: Adults will be charged $8 with children and senior citizen tickets gaining entry for $5. Students with a valid ID from an NE10 program will be admitted for $2.

LAST TIME OUT: Senior Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) broke her own single-season program record for rebounds (387) on Sunday, helping the Hawks to a 55-44 victory over the University of New Haven in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals.

The Hawks were led by 20 points from junior Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.), who finished with four takeaways. Ryan had 17 rebounds, 15 points, four assists (career-high) and two blocks while junior Jenoyce Laniyan (Bedford, N.H.) was responsible for a career-high 12 points and two blocks off the bench.

Down by a 4-0 margin, Saint Anselm responded with a 22-4 scoring run to capture a game-high lead of 14 points. At one point, the Hawks potted 16 consecutive points on the way to the big advantage; in that run, Saint Anselm was led by six points from Ryan and a total of 10 points in the paint.

Between the first and second half, New Haven settled down and scored 17 of the game's 22 points across an eight-plus minute stretch of play. Camryn DeBose had six points herself and Aurora Deshaies, one of the NE10's leaders in field goal percentage, put home four points under the basket.

New Haven came from behind to capture a 39-38 lead with just 13 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks put the game out of reach with a strong 11-2 scoring run over the game's next four-plus minutes. The Saint Anselm lead grew to 13 points in the game's final minute, thanks to the hosts posting 17 of the contest's final 22 points.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • The top rebounding team in the Northeast-10 for the second consecutive season, the Hawks enter the 2019-20 postseason as the reigning NCAA Division II East Region Champions after toppling three-consecutive higher-seeded teams in last year's regionals.
  • In the most recent NCAA Division II East Region rankings released on Wednesday, Saint Anselm moved up one spot to assume the No. 4 position, thanks to back-to-back victories against strong Bentley and New Haven sides. Against in-region foes this year, the Hawks have logged a convincing 20-4 overall record.
  • The Hawks lead the conference in several rebounding categories, including rebounds per game (44.23), rebound margin (9.9), and defensive rebounds per game (30.5). The team averages 73.8 points per game, the second-best mark in the league, while shooting 43.6% from the floor to rank second in the NE10.
  • The Hawks ranked as high as fourth in all of NCAA Division II in December, according to the D2SIDA National Media Poll. At the same time, Saint Anselm ranked sixth in the country, according to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association rankings.
  • Saint Anselm has earned three U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Week awards this season as Ryan picked up two of those three accolades. Steinman was recognized on the week ending Dec. 22.
  • The Hawks have earned 11 weekly awards from the NE10. Ryan has secured six NE10 Player of the Week awards in 2019-20 with Steinman picking up those honors twice. Freshman Macy Spinks (Luton, England) has drawn Rookie of the Week accolades on three occasions.
  • The Hawks are averaging 73.8 points per game through 26 games, the fifth-most in a single season in team history. Saint Anselm has not posted north of 70 points per game in a season since the 1994-95 campaign (76.9).
  • At the free throw line, Saint Anselm has buried 76.5% of its shots, the highest mark in team history. The Hawks are shooting 43.6% from the floor to date, the ninth-best figure in team annals.
  • Ryan, who recently became the program's all-time leading scorer, has averaged 22.5 points and 14.9 rebounds per game across 26 contests as a senior. She leads all of NCAA Division II in defensive rebounds per game (10.9) while ranking second with 24 double-doubles. She is third nationally in rebounds (387) and rebounds per game (14.9).
  • Across just 91 games between Boston College and Saint Anselm, Ryan is the program's all-time career scorer, breaking the record during the regular season against Saint Michael's while finishing the day with 1,668 points. She eclipsed the previous team record of 1,652 points in 105 games set by Rachel Jackson '85 from 1981-85. Ryan currently boasts 1,712 career points.
  • As a senior, Ryan has scored 586 points in just 26 games only one season removed from a 592-point, 32-game season as a junior. The single-season record of 618 points, set by Kristen Skoglund '96, was achieved in 27 games in 1995-96. Skoglund's single-season mark of 22.9 points per contest stands as the team record to this day.
  • Ryan set the single-season program record, doing so against New Haven on Sunday in the NE10 Quarterfinals – she posted an all-time mark of 385 rebounds last season, breaking the previous record of 344 caroms by Andrea Sunday '95 in 1994-95. With 387 caroms to her credit this year, she ranks second all-time in team history behind Jackson and her four-season total of 1,185.
  • Among active NCAA Division II student-athletes, Ryan ranks first in career rebounding average (12.0) and double-doubles (62). Her 1,093 career rebounds is second among active student-athletes and her 18.8 career points per game is the sixth-best figure in the country. She is one of only 13 active student-athletes with 1,500 career points and at least 800 career rebounds.
  • Steinman, the league's leader in free throws made (134) and free throws attempted (167), is averaging 19.8 points per game to rank second in the league. Her 7.8 rebounds per game is also the ninth-best figure as her all-around strong season has also produced the league's sixth-best free throw percentage (80.2).
  • Her 134 free throws is the third-most in a single season by a Hawks student-athlete. Skoglund set the program's all-time, single-season record with 148 in 1995-96.
  • Steinman is 27th among NCAA Division II student-athletes with 19.8 points per game and her 83.7% free throw percentage ranks her fourth all-time in Saint Anselm history. Her 13.4 career points per game is the team's eighth-best figure since the squad's inception in the mid-1970's.
  • Junior Grace Guachione (Pittsfield, Mass.) is averaging 1.92 steals per game, leading Saint Anselm and posting the fourth-best average in the NE10. She is also dishing out 3.3 helpers per tilt, ranking 11th in the league in assists per game and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.31). She is averaging a career-high 8.8 points per game, having started all 26 games to date.
  • Spinks ranks eighth in the NE10 with a 1.48 assist-to-turnover ratio and her 83 assists on the year is good for 15th in the league. She is averaging 6.4 points per game in 26 contests played as a freshman, pouring home 25 three-point baskets and making all but one of her 12 free throws to date.
  • Senior Sara Messler (Durham, N.H.) is pulling down exactly six rebounds per game as a senior, a career-high figure, and her 51 assists is a personal best mark in a single season. She has scoring 7.5 points per game in her fourth and final season on the Hilltop.
  • Laniyan has made a career-high 26 appearances for Saint Anselm, coming off the bench and shooting north of 46.2% from the field. Against New Haven in the NE10 Quarterfinals, she was responsible for a career-high 12 points and two blocks off the bench.

SCOUTING ADELPHI

  • The Panthers enter play with a 27-2 overall record and sit just win shy of tying the team's all-time single-season win record. Since entering the top 10 of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll in early February, the Panthers have jumped to eighth in the most recent poll revealed on Tuesday.
  • The Panthers rank fourth in NCAA Division II in three-point field goal defense (25.2%). Adelphi also ranks in the top-10 nationally in won-lost percentage (93.1), assists (527), assists per game (18.2), three-point field goals made (282), three-point field goals per game (9.7) and rebounds (1,277).
  • Leonie Edringer, a First Team All-Conference selection, leads the Panthers with 15.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She leads the NE10 with 67 rejections. Versus league opponents, Edringer has corralled a conference-best 76 offensive rebounds.
  • Katie Murphy, earning Second Team All-NE10 merits, has the third-most assists of any student-athlete in NCAA Division II with 192. She also sits third in assists per game with 6.6 per tilt. Doubling her career scoring average at 12.1 points per game, she has connected on just over 44% of her three-point field goal attempts.
  • Emily Miccile is ranked eighth in the NE10 with 1.76 assists per game and her 51 takeaways on the season are the fourth-most of any league student-athlete.
  • The Panthers have three student-athletes that average north of two three-point field goals mad eper game, including Julia Strachan (2.66), Fallyn Stephens (2.55) and Jess Camarda (2.0).

NE10 POSTSEASON ALL-TIME

  • Saint Anselm won its first and only NE10 tournament title in 1990-91, defeating nationally-ranked Bentley by an 81-76 margin. The Hawks have finished as the tournament's runner-up on five occasions, most recently in 1998-99.
  • In just seven NE10 tournament appearances prior to this season, Adelphi entered this season with an 11-5 overall record in the league playoffs. The Panthers have won two NE10 titles (2014-15, 2016-17) and finished as the league's runner-up in 2013-14.
  • The Hawks are 28-29 in the NE10 postseason with their furthest recent trip in the tournament coming last season with a semifinals loss to Bentley. Against Adelphi in the NE10 postseason, Saint Anselm is 1-0 with the victory coming in last season's NE10 Quarterfinals.

HEAD COACHES

  • Saint Anselm head coach Corey Boilard has registered a 59-28 (.678) record since joining the Hawks prior to the 2017-18 season. After a 17-win campaign in his first season, the Hawks went on to post a 22-10 record last year, winning the program's first-ever East Region Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
  • Boilard owns a 143-81 (.638) overall record between his time with the Hawks and NCAA Division III Johnson & Wales (R.I.). With the Wildcats, Boilard's teams went 62-22 (.738) overall in his last three seasons, making two NCAA Tournament appearances overall.
  • Missy Traversi, in her fourth season at Adelphi, has compiled a 83-36 (.697) overall record entering Thursday's NE10 Semifinals matchup. She joined the Panthers after a two season career at NCAA Division III Wheelock where she posted a 29-22 (.569) mark. She coached the nation's finest three-point field goal defense as the Wildcats held their opponents to under 21.7% shooting from distance.

ALL-TIME vs. ADELPHI

  • Saint Anselm holds an all-time lead of 9-3 over the Panthers in the all-time series that dates back to Jan. 9, 2010. The Hawks have posted four consecutive victories over Adelphi entering play on Thursday, including a win in last season's NE10 Quarterfinals.
