Football Set For 2006 Season

9/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

A Look at the Series With AIC: The visiting Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series by a 6-3 margin and have won the last five meetings. In 2005, AIC downed Saint Anselm by 51-28 margin as both teams posted strong offensive numbers in the final game of the regular season. The two teams first met in 1934 as Saint Anselm came away with a 41-0 shutout win in Manchester . The Hawks have two shutout wins in the series, with the last coming by a 13-0 final in 1941.

A Quick Look at the Hawks: The Hawks return 42 letterwinners and 13 starters from last season, including preseason All-American defensive end Casey Larson. The offensive attack features a more balanced approach with a deep wide receiver corp in Pat Turner, Mike Wojtas, Corey Williams, Mike Garcarz and Justin French and an emerging running game with Ryan Drago and Jason Olsen. For the Hawks to be successful against a solid running game by AIC, the team will need solid performances from the defensive line, a veteran linebacking corp led by senior Tom Kelleher and an experienced secondary anchored by senior cornerback Mark Wysocki.

A Quick Look at the Yellow Jackets: The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 5-4 season in 2005 and a fifth-place finish in the Northeast-10 standings. The team returns 36 of 57 letterwinners and 18 of 22 starters, including 10 on the offensive side of the ball. AIC ended last season on a two-game winning streak, including a 51-28 win over Saint Anselm in the regular-season finale at John Homer Miller Field. Art Wilkins returns for his 13th season as the head coach of AIC and enters 2006 with a 73-51 career record.

Topping the offensive attack for AIC is senior running back Marlon Beckles,  one of the top backs in the Northeast-10 Conference. He enters 2006 in fourth place on AIC's all-time rushing list with 2,720 yards and sits just 373 yards behing second-place Rashid Thomas. He is a three-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection and was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2003.

All-America Candidate Casey Larson: Senior defensive end Casey Larson is named as a preseason All-American by a number of publications. Larson, who led the nation in tackles for a loss in 2005, is a First Team Preseason selection by the National Consensus Draft Service and as a Second Team All-American by D2Football.com. Larson finished last season as the Northeast-10 leader in sacks (14.5) and tackles for a loss and was honored as a Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team honoree.

A Look Ahead to Next Week: In their first road game of the year, the Hawks make the trip to Edinboro next week for the second game of the season. The game is the first-ever meeting between the two teams and is the longest road trip of the season for Saint Anselm. The Fighting Scots are coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005 and will be the Hawks' lone non-conference game of the 2006 season. The game is the home opener for Edinboro.

Webcasting: Each of the this year's Northeast-10 Conference football games will be webcast, including live video, over the internet. Each of the Hawks' five home games will be available online with Ken Belbin and Tom Gauthier calling all of the action. All of the games will be available at www.NE-10.tv .

Across the Nation: On this year's roster the Hawks have players that hail from 12 different states, including a trio of players from California and three from Arizona. Sophomore running back Jason Olsen, a transfer from Northern State University , is a native of Monterey , Calif. He came to Saint Anselm from 3,243 miles across the country, the furthest of any player on this year's roster. The Hawks also boast six players from right here in New Hampshire , including Jonathan Zaleski from Manchester .
