The Game:Â Saturday's game matches Saint Anselm against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Jess Dow Field ion New Haven, Conn.
Saint Anselm enters the game with a 4-4 overall mark, 3-4 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks are coming their third straight defeat and fourth in the last five games following a 62-3 loss against Bentley. The Hawks set several dubious records in the game and will look to get back on track with its final road game of the season.
SCSU enters the game at 6-2, 5-2 in the Northeast-10. The Owls still have an outside chance at tying for a conference championship but their hopes of a national playoff spot took a severe blow in a 14-7 loss to C.W. Post two weeks ago. Still, the team recovered with a dominating 34-14 win over Stonehill on the road last weekend.
Series History:Â SCSU leads the all-time series, 3-2 with the home team winning all five games. The series has also been marked by some wild play, including a Northeast-10 Conference record for points in 1999 with SCSC taking a 66-42 decision. The winning team has never scored fewer than 36 points with the Owls brining home a 49-9 win last season.
In the game, SCSU scored five rushing touchdowns with four scoring drives of 60 yards or more. This will mark the second straight visit for the Hawks to New Haven, Conn.
Inside The Numbers:Â SCSU is ranked second in the NE-10 in both scoring offense (37.4 ppg, 17th in Division II), and scoring defense (14.8 ppg, 13th in Division II). The Owls lead the league in rushing offense with over 202 yards per game (32nd in Division II) and in total offense at 468 per game (9th in Division II). The team is also 16th nationally in total defense at 276 yards per game. Their offensive line averages just under 330 pounds on it starting unit and will be eager to test a Saint Anselm defense that has been good against the run this season.
The Hawks allowed just three rushing yards to Bryant through regulation two weeks ago. In the game, the Hawks set single game school record for sacks with 10.0 for 49 yards and tackles for a loss with 18.0 for 80 yards. The Hawks are allowing just 77.0 yard rushing per game (9th in Division II) and are second in the NE-10 with a 1.8 yards per carry average against them. The team is also ranked nationally in total defense, coming in at No. 35 with just over 306 yards allowed per game.
Saint Anselm: Despite allowing a season-high 626 yards to Bentley last weekend, the Hawks continue to lead the Northeast-10 in sacks with 42 and tackles for a loss with 97. Last weekend, Bentley's spread offense limited to just two sacks and six tackles for a loss. The Hawks did manage to set a single season record for interceptions. Brendan Kent's third quarter interception gave the team 15 picks on the year, topping the old mark of 14 set in two different seasons. It was Kent's first career interception.
SAC Pack:Â Saint Anselm College is keyed by its defense which has seen 21 different players record at least one tackle for a loss, 13 different players record at least one sack, and 13 different players involved in either a turnover or a blocked kick. The Hawks have already recorded a record 42 sacks for 262 yards and 97 tackles for a loss of 430 yards this season.
Nothing Could Be Finer: Senior DE David Heiner needs just one half tackle for a loss to tie the program's single season mark in that category (24.0 set by Lance Flagg in 2002). Two weeks ago, Heiner set the school's career record for sacks with 22.5.
Heiner is second in Division II with 14.0 sacks (single season school record), and leads the nation with 23.5 tackles for a loss. He also leads the nation in solo tackles for a loss (20), TFL yards (105), and is second nationally in solo sacks (13) and sack yards (105).
Heiner has 55 total tackles (32-23) on the season which ranks him 15th among all NE-10 players.
Sunny Days: Junior S Brian Sundell slipped into second place among NE-10 defenders in total tackles after a seven-tackle outing last week (5-2). He still has 83 (38 solo) and is in line to top the program's single season mark of 91 held by two different players. He also has three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Another Record: Two weeks ago, sophomore WR/K Michael Garcarz set another single game record for receptions with 16 for 122 yards and a touchdown against Bryant. He also caught a 2-point conversion, kicked 2-of-3 field goals including a 32-yard game-tying boot with six seconds remaining, and also completed a 13-yard pass... Garcarz ranks fourth in the NE-10 Conference in points per game (8.8) and third in receptions per game (6.00, 28th in Division II). Garcarz is one reception shy of tying the school's single season mark, held by Travis Pelletier.
He also ranks first in field goals per game with 1.0, which also ranks him among the nation's top 20 kickers. He also holds the conference's longest successful FG try this year, at 38 yards accomplished both against Stonehill and against Bentley this past weekend.
DiMore: Derek DiMartino ran 30 times for 107 yards against Bryant two weeks ago. It was his third 10-yard game of the season. He also caught seven passes for 65 yards. He is second in the NE-10 in rushing yards (694) and rushing TDs (5). He has 889 all-purposes yards to rank fifth in the NE-10 with 111 per game. His 25 receptions rank second on the Hawks, along with teammate Kevin Lukas.
More on Lukas:Â Lukas has caught 25 passes for 410 yards and three touchdowns so far this season to emerge as a legitimate deep threat. His 15.2 yards per reception average ranks second all-time to the 15,5 Kevin L'Ecuyer averaged in 1999.
Show Me Some Leg: Sophomore punter Artie Kurshumi is currently third among NE-10 kickers with a 38.7 yard per punt average. 10 of his 41 kicks have ended up inside the opponent's 20 yard line.
SCSU: The Owls will rely on the strong arm of former minor league baseball hand and current QB Mike Abate who averages nearly 255 yards per game through the air. The Owls will miss leading receiver Jim Lokowiak who is out with an injury but a pair of running backs, Shawn Harris and Kofi Wilson will look to make up for that loss by combining for 127 yards per game. Harris is averaging an NE-10 best 6.7 yards per carry while Wilson averages 5.3 ypc.
