Hawks Host Bentley Saturday at 1 p.m.

10/22/2004 12:00:00 AM

The Game: Saturday's game matches Saint Anselm against the Falcons of Bentley College in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Grappone Stadium.

Bentley enters Saturday's game as the Northeast Region's third-ranked team with an overall record of 6-1. The Falcons are coming off a 49-7 win over Stonehill last Saturday.

Saint Anselm enters the game with a 4-3 overall mark, 3-3 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks are coming off a tough loss at Bryant, 28-21 in double overtime despite setting a total of 13 single game, season and career records in the game.

Series History: Bentley leads the series 3-0 with wins in each of the previous three seasons. Following a heart-stopping 27-24 victory in 2001, the series has been all Bentley with the Falcons posting wins of 28-0 in 2002 and 38-3 last season.

Last season, Bentley posted 31 second half points to win going away. Marc Eddy threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns on 20-for-40 attempts to pace the win in a season opener for both teams.

Inside The Numbers: Its going to be offense versus defense this week with the high-octane Falcons banging helmets with a stingy Saint Anselm defense. Bentley is the top scoring team in the NE-10, averaging 38.6 points and over 400 yards of offense per game. They are completing nearly 54-percent of their passes for over 290 yards per game and a total of 20 scores through the air. The Falcons are likely to air it out a lot this Saturday with Saint Anselm providing one of the nation's best run defenses.

The Hawks allowed just three rushing yards to Bryant through regulation last Saturday, and 22 rushing yards all told. In the game, the Hawks set single game school record for sacks with 10.0 for 49 yards and tackles for a loss with 18.0 for 80 yards. The Hawks are ranked second in the NE-10 in total defense with 261 yards allowed per game and a league-best 3.5 yards allowed per play.

An interesting storyline on Saturday will be the time of possession factor. Saint Anselm has ranked last in the league all season in terms of holding onto the ball. The Hawks reversed course last weekend however with the Hawks running an astounding 50 more plays than did Bryant (113-63).

Saint Anselm: The Hawks scored 11 points in the final 3:54 to send it into overtime last weekend. The team marched 52 yards on six plays to score a touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion to get to within 21-18. The Hawks' defense then stonewalled Bryant on three straight plays covering just 32 seconds to get the ball back with 3:22 remaining. They then marched 43 yards on 16 plays, converting three fourth down conversions of seven yards or more to set up a 32-yard game tying field goal by Michael Garcarz with just six seconds left in regulation.

The Hawks could not get over the hump in OT however, missing a 26-yard field goal in the first OT and giving up a game-long 17 yard run to the Bulldogs in the second OT.

SAC Pack: Saint Anselm College is keyed by its defense which has seen 21 different players record at least one tackle for a loss, 13 different players record at least one sack, and 13 different players involved in either a turnover or a blocked kick. The Hawks have already recorded a record 40 sacks for 249 yards and 91 tackles for a loss of 401 yards this season.

Nothing Could Be Finer: With 3.0 sacks Saturday at Bryant, senior DE David Heiner set the school's career record for sacks with 22.5.

Heiner, leads all of Division II with 14.0 sacks (single season school record), and 23.5 tackles for a loss. He also leads the nation in solo sacks (13), solo tackles for a loss (20), sack yards (105), and TFL yards (139).

He needs just one half tackle for a loss to tie the program's single season mark in that category (24.0 set by Lance Flagg in 2002). Heiner has 55 total tackles (32-23) on the season which ranks him sixth among all NE-10 players.

NE-10 Leader: Junior S Brian Sundell continues to lead the NE-10 in total tackles with 76 (33 solo). That number is also 18th best in Division II. He also has three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Another Record: Sophomore WR/K Michael Garcarz set another single game record for receptions with 16 for 122 yards and a touchdown against Bryant on Saturday. He also caught a 2-point conversion, kicked 2-of-3 field goals including a 32-yard game-tying boot with six seconds remaining, and also completed a 13-yard pass... Garcarz ranks third in the NE-10 Conference in both points per game (9.6) and receptions per game (6.57), and ranks first in field goals per game with 1.0. He also holds the conference's longest successful FG try this year, at 38 yards.

DiMore: Derek DiMartino ran 30 times for 107 yards against Bryant. It was his third 10-yard game of the season. He also caught seven passes for 65 yards. He is second in the NE-10 in rushing yards (668) and rushing TDs (5). He has 840 all-purposes yards to rank third in the NE-10 with 120 per game.

Show Me Some Leg: Sophomore punter Artie Kurshumi is currently tied for the lead among NE-10 kickers with a 39.3 yard per punt average. 10 of his 35 kicks have ended up inside the opponent's 20 yard line.

Bentley: Bentley scored 42 unanswered points in the middle of the game Saturday to rout Stonehill 49-7. Dallas Mall led all players with nine catches for 93 yards and three touchdowns. During the middle part of the game, when Bentley scored five straight touchdowns, the Falcons averaged possession on the Stonehill 48 yardline.

Eddy extended his own Division II record for three-touchdown games with his 25th on Saturday, and he tied the division record by throwing a touchdown pass in 23 consecutive games. Mall extended his own Division II record by recording at least one TD reception in his 36th game. He has 51 catches for 650 yards and 12 scores this season.

Anthony Seaforth and Paul Tetzel combine efforts for a dangerous kick return tandem. Seaforth leads the NE-10 in punt return average (17.8) while Tetzel leads the league in kick return average (27.0)… Derrick Marsan is tied with Kurshumi at 39.3 yards per punt… Tim Feeney is the team's leading tackler with 50 (26 solo). He has 12.0 tackles for a loss (9-6).
