No. 8 Field Hockey Blanks Franklin Pierce, 2-0

RINDGE, N.H. – Behind a two-goal outing from senior Meghan Smith, the No. 8 Saint Anselm College field hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 2-0, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at Sodexo Field.

Highlights

  • Senior Meghan Smith scored both goals for Saint Anselm, her second multi-goal game of the season, giving her a team-leading seven goals on the season.
  • Junior Kelly Holmes and sophomore Bella DiFiore each recorded an assist.
  • Smith led the Hawks with four shots, with all four shots landing on goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wehrum and sophomore Layla Cameron combined for the shutout, with Cameron making the Hawks' lone save.

How it Happened

Saint Anselm opened the scoring just 2:07 into the contest when Smith found the back of the cage with an assist from Holmes to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Hawks continued to pressure the Ravens throughout the opening quarter, recording four shots and holding Franklin Pierce without a shot.

Saint Anselm generated four more shots and three penalty corners during the second quarter but could not add to its advantage, sending the Hawks into halftime with a one-goal lead.

The Hawks doubled their advantage at 8:39 into the third quarter when Smith scored her second goal of the night with an assist from DiFiore. Franklin Pierce registered its first shot of the contest later in the quarter, but Cameron made the save to preserve the two-goal Saint Anselm advantage.

Saint Anselm continued to control play in the fourth quarter, limiting Franklin Pierce to one shot while recording four of its own. The Hawks held the Ravens off the scoreboard through the final whistle to secure the 2-0 shutout.

Saint Anselm (4-2) returns to action Sunday, Sept. 27 at Assumption University (2-3) in their first matchup against the Greyhounds. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.
