No. 9 Field Hockey Rolls Past Saint Michael’s, 7-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Behind a hat trick from junior Meghan Carey, the No. 9 Saint Anselm College field hockey team defeated Saint Michael's College, 7-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening at Grappone Stadium.

Highlights

  • Junior Meghan Carey recorded her first goal of the season, first career multi-goal game, and first career hat trick, finishing with three goals on four shots.
  • Sophomore Bella DiFiore scored twice and added an assist, while junior Leila Härtel and freshman Khloe Schultz each scored once.
  • Juniors Maggie McCready, Colleen Stankiewicz, and Sophie Smith each recorded an assist.
  • Saint Anselm outshot Saint Michael's, 43-4, including a 23-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks held a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wehrum and sophomore Layla Cameron combined for the shutout, marking Saint Anselm's second consecutive combined shutout and third clean sheet of the campaign.
  • With the victory, the Hawks have won the last 17 meetings against Saint Michael's, dating back to the 2015 season. Saint Anselm holds a 21-15 record in the all-time series against the Purple Knights, which began in 2001.

How it Happened

Saint Anselm opened the scoring 6:33 into the contest when Carey found the back of the cage with an assist from McCready. The Hawks continued to pressure Saint Michael's throughout the opening quarter, recording 16 shots and holding a 1-0 advantage after 15 minutes.

The Hawks added three goals in the second quarter to take control of the contest. DiFiore scored at 1:14 of the period before Härtel found the cage with an assist from Stankiewicz with 5:03 left in the half. Schultz capped the four-goal half with an unassisted tally with 2:44 remaining, sending Saint Anselm into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

Carey completed her multi-goal game just 1:22 into the third quarter, scoring with assists from DiFiore. Saint Michael's recorded three shots in the period, but Cameron turned aside both shots on goal to preserve the shutout.

DiFiore added her second goal of the night 45 seconds into the fourth quarter with an assist from Sophie Smith. Carey completed her hat trick at 3:03 of the period, giving the Hawks a 7-0 advantage. Saint Anselm held the Purple Knights without a shot in the fourth quarter to secure the shutout.

Saint Anselm (5-2) returns to action Saturday, Oct. 3 at Bentley University in their Northeast 10 Conference opener, with the start time set for 12:00 p.m. The Hawks and the Falcons met in a non-conference game at Grappone Stadium on Sept. 9 in which Saint Anselm won 2-1.
