Hawks Roll to Doubleheader Sweep of Saint Michael’s

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team swept Saint Michael's College in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader, earning wins of 9-1 in five innings and 6-2 at the South Athletic Fields on Thursday.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 9 (15-14, 7-6 NE10), Saint Michael's 1 (5-20, 3-12 NE10) – 5 inn.
 
Highlights 
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen improved to 7-1 in the circle, throwing her sixth complete game of the season in five innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
  • Junior Caitlyn Duquette went 2-2 with a home run, her first-career homer, three runs batted in, one run scored, and a walk.
  • Senior Rose Reitmeyer hit a solo home run, her NE10-leading ninth of the season, finishing 1-4 with an RBI and one run scored.
  • Sophomore Zaynah Wotkowicz launched a home run, the first of her career, going 1-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Senior Madeline Trisket recorded a 2-3 effort with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
  • Junior Sarah Cipriani went 1-3 with a double and scored once, while freshman Kierra Souphakhot added a hit and a run scored.
  • Junior Brooke Tardugno reached base in all four plate appearances with a single and three walks, scoring twice and stealing a base.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia and junior Abby Wrinn each recorded a base hit in the win.
How it Happened
After Bergen worked out of early traffic in the top of the first, the Hawks struck first in the bottom half as Tardugno walked, stole second, and eventually came around to score on an error for a 1-0 lead.
 
Saint Anselm broke the game open in the second inning, tallying five runs on six hits. Cipriani doubled to start the rally before Trisket delivered a two-run double to left center. Later in the inning, Duquette launched a three-run home run to right field, extending the advantage to 6-0.
 
The Hawks added on in the fourth as Reitmeyer connected on a solo shot to center. Saint Michael's got on the board with a solo home run in the fifth, but Wotkowicz answered in the bottom half with a home run of her own.
 
Saint Anselm plated the final run later in the inning, capitalizing on a Purple Knights error to secure the 9-1 victory in five innings.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 6 (16-14, 8-6 NE10), Saint Michael's 2 (5-21, 3-13 NE10)
 
Highlights 
  • After today's sweep, Saint Anselm improves to 74-10 in 84 meetings all-time with Saint Michael's.
  • Junior Kendra Lee improved to 7-5 on the year, tossing a complete game while allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts.
  • Reitmeyer went 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in, scoring once.
  • Salafia and sophomore Katie Fox each hit home runs, with Fox going 2-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Salafia hit her second of the season while Fox went deep for the third time this year.
  • Fox and Wotkowicz both drove in a pair of runs, as Fox is now on a four-game hitting streak.
  • Cipriani went 1-2 with a double and a walk, while Trisket added a double, a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Tardugno scored twice, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, and stole a base.
How it Happened
The Hawks jumped out early once again, scoring two runs in the first inning behind RBI doubles from Reitmeyer and Fox to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Saint Anselm added two more in the second inning as Reitmeyer delivered a two-run single, extending the advantage to 4-0. The Hawks continued their offensive push in the third with back-to-back solo home runs from Salafia and Fox to make it 6-0.
 
Saint Michael's broke through in the fourth with an RBI single and added another run in the fifth, but Lee kept the Purple Knights from getting any closer the rest of the way.
 
The Hawks' defense held strong over the final two innings, as Lee closed out the complete game effort to secure the 6-2 victory, completing the doubleheader sweep.
