Softball Suffers Setback at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College softball team dropped a pair of games to Adelphi University in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader, falling 4-0 and 3-2 on Saturday at Janet L. Ficke Field.

Game 1: Adelphi 4 (19-12, 15-2 NE10), Saint Anselm 0 (16-15, 8-7 NE10)
 
Highlights 
  • Sophomore Katie Fox extended her hitting streak to six games as she went 1-1 with a double and drew two walks.
  • Junior Caitlyn Duquette went 1-3 with a single, and senior Lily Mason tallied her first base hit of the season, finishing 1-3.
  • Junior Brooke Tardugno drew a walk and stole a base.
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen falls to 7-2 in the circle, allowing seven hits and four earned runs over four innings with one strikeout.
  • Junior Kendra Lee tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits with one walk.
How it Happened
Adelphi struck early in the bottom of the first, using a leadoff double and a pair of run-producing plays to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Hawks threatened in the second and third innings, putting runners on base, but were unable to push a run across as the Panthers maintained their advantage. Adelphi added two more runs in the fourth inning behind a pair of RBI doubles, extending the lead to 4-0.
 
Saint Anselm put two runners in scoring position in the sixth following a walk and a double from Fox, but the Panthers worked out of the jam to keep the Hawks off the board.
 
Lee held Adelphi scoreless over the final two innings, but Saint Anselm was unable to generate late offense as the Hawks fell in game one, 4-0.

Game 2: Adelphi 3 (20-12, 16-2 NE10), Saint Anselm 2 (16-16, 8-8 NE10)
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm falls to 14-21-1 all-time against Adelphi.
  • Lee falls to 7-6 on the year, tossing a complete game as she allowed just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts.
  • Senior Rose Reitmeyer tallied her NE10-leading 10th home run of the season, while also notching her seventh double as she finished 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior Sarah Cipriani had a perfect performance at the plate, going 2-2 with a pair of singles and a run scored, also walking once.
  • Freshman Kierra Souphakhot recorded a hit, her fourth base knock in her last five games.
How it Happened
Saint Anselm struck first in the opening inning as Reitmeyer delivered an inside-the-park home run to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
 
The Hawks added another run in the second inning, capitalizing on traffic on the bases as Reitmeyer drove in her second run of the game after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, extending the lead to 2-0.
 
Lee kept Adelphi off the board through the first five innings, working through multiple threats to maintain the two-run advantage.
 
The Panthers broke through in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits, while taking advantage of a Saint Anselm error to take a 3-2 lead.
 
Saint Anselm was unable to answer in the seventh, as Adelphi held on to complete the sweep with a 3-2 victory.
