GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College softball team fell in a pair of Northeast 10 Conference contests at Adelphi University, 5-0 and 5-4 on Sunday at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Game 1: Adelphi 5 (21-12, 17-2 NE10), Saint Anselm 0 (16-17, 8-9 NE10)
Highlights
- Junior Caitlyn Duquette accounted for both of the Hawks' hits, going 2-3 with a pair of doubles.
- Junior Brooke Tardugno reached base twice with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
- Junior Kendra Lee allowed eight hits and five earned runs over six innings with two strikeouts, falling to 7-7 in the circle this season.
- Senior Rose Reitmeyer and sophomore Katie Fox each drew a walk in the game.
How it Happened
Adelphi plated two runs in the bottom of the first behind an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead. The Panthers added another run in the second inning following a triple and a sacrifice fly, extending their advantage to 3-0.
Saint Anselm threatened in the fourth inning as Duquette doubled and Fox worked a walk to put two runners on, but Adelphi worked out of the inning to keep the Hawks off the board.
Adelphi added insurance in the sixth inning with two runs on three hits, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Hawks' bats fell short, as Adelphi secured the 5-0 victory in game one.
Game 2: Adelphi 5 (22-12, 18-2 NE10), Saint Anselm 4 (16-18, 8-10 NE10)
Highlights
- Saint Anselm falls to 14-23-1 all-time against Adelphi.
- Junior Mackenzie Bergen took the loss, dropping to 7-3 on the year as she allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings.
- Sophomore Alexa Salafia tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits with one strikeout.
- Along with her strong performance in the circle, Salafia led the Hawks with a perfect 4-4 performance, adding a double, two runs batted in, and one run scored.
- Reitmeyer went 2-4 with a double and one run scored, while Duquette finished 1-4 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored.
- Junior Sarah Cipriani delivered a pinch-hit RBI single as she went 1-1.
- Tardugno had a double, scoring once while classmate Abby Wrinn tallied a base hit, going 1-3.
How it Happened
The Hawks came out swinging in the first inning, scoring two runs on three extra-base hits. Tardugno led off with a double before Duquette, and Salafia followed with doubles of their own to give Saint Anselm a 2-0 lead.
Adelphi responded quickly in the bottom half, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Panthers added two more runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Saint Anselm errors to extend the lead to 5-2.
Saint Anselm began to chip away in the sixth inning as Cipriani delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to cut the deficit to two.
The Hawks threatened again in the seventh, as Reitmeyer doubled and later scored on a Salafia RBI single to make it a one-run game, but Adelphi held on to secure the 5-4 victory.
