WORCESTER, Mass. – Fueled by a nine-RBI day by sophomore Jackson Powers, the Saint Anselm College baseball team completed its series against Assumption University with a clean sweep, defeating the Greyhounds in both games of a Sunday afternoon Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at H.L. Rocheleau '24 Field.
The Hawks have now won their last nine matchups with the Greyhounds, dating back to May 4, 2024.
Game 1 – Saint Anselm 13 (13-14, 11-8 NE10), Assumption 8 (8-22, 4-15 NE10)
Highlights
- Sophomore Coleson Kaluza recorded two stolen two bases while going 3-for-5 at the plate with a team-high four RBI. Kaluza also swiped two bags in the victory.
- Sophomore Peter Fischer launched his third home run of the season, the fifth of his career, to score the Hawks last run of game one in the seventh inning as part of a 4-for-5 performance at the dish. He notched three RBI and two runs.
- Sophomore Jackson Powers notched a single and a double, driving in four runs and scoring once.
- Sophomore George Slauson went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, recording two runs and an RBI.
- Junior Brendan Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with an RBI double.
- Junior Mavrick Bourdeau drew a pair of walks and went 1-for-3 at the plate, scoring a pair of runs.
- Freshman Brady Gillis tossed 2.2 innings in his second start of the campaign, before sophomore Jake Bourdeau came in to earn the win over 2.2 innings of work, logging four strikeouts. Junior Quinn MacDonald closed out the final 1.2 innings to secure the victory.
How it Happened
The Hawks offense was led by Slauson and Fischer in the first inning. Slauson hit an RBI double to right to score Kaluza, followed by Fischer's single which drove in two runs to make it 3-0. Assumption answered back in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer from James McDermott to tie it in the bottom half.
The Greyhounds took their first lead of the contest in the third, scoring one run on an RBI double.
In the fourth, Powers singled up the middle and advanced to second on a fielding error as sophomore Gavin Rigney crossed the plate to make it 4-4.
The fifth inning was a productive one for the Hawks as they recorded six runs on just three hits. Kaluza started off the scoring with a single to the right side, driving in Fischer. Powers stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and launched a double to the gap in right field to clear the bases before coming all the way home on an Assumption miscue to make it 9-4 in favor of the visitors. Gonzalez doubled to left-center to drive in Slauson, rounding out the five-run frame. Assumption got back within five in the bottom half off its second solo homer of the contest.
The Hawks put up a pair of runs in the sixth, starting when Kaluza stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher's throw down, allowing Rigney to score. Kaluza later came home on a passed ball to increase the Hawks' lead to 12-5.
Assumption hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run on each, in a comeback attempt which cut the deficit to five runs.
In the seventh, Fischer launched a solo homer over the fence in right center to make it 13-7. Assumption earned one more run in the bottom half but could not overcome the Hawks' advantage.
Game 2 – Saint Anselm 10 (14-14, 12-8 NE10), Assumption 5 (8-23, 4-16 NE10)
Highlights
- Powers recorded his second home run of the weekend series while going 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and a pair of runs scored. He added one double in the triumph.
- Sophomore Xavier Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with an RBI and one run.
- The Hawks recorded seven stolen bases in game two from Bourdeau, Gonzalez, and Kaluza, and one from Powers.
- Senior Nolan Mederos pitched five complete innings for the Hawks, allowing only one run on zero hits while walking three and striking out six.
- Finn Ramseyer came to earn his fourth save, his third in the last three appearances, over 1.1 innings of work. The freshman allowed one run on no hits and one walk, striking out two in the save.
How it Happened
A defensive miscue from the Hawks allowed Assumption to record one run in the first inning, giving the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.
Saint Anselm broke through in the fifth as a wild pitch brought home Fischer and advanced X. Gonzalez to third. Kaluza reached on a fielding error, allowing Gonzalez to score, tying the game at one. Powers doubled down the right field line, driving in Kaluza as Saint Anselm took a 3-1 lead. The Hawks added to their lead in the seventh as Powers singled to bring in two runs before Slauson followed up with an RBI single to finish the seventh with a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth, Assumption cut into the deficit with a three-run homer from Chris Klein.
Powers notched a two-run jack in the ninth to push Saint Anselm's lead to four runs. Fischer continued to extend the Hawks' lead with a double to right field, sending junior Austin Brune in to score. X. Gonzalez pushed in Saint Anselm's final run of the series, scoring Fischer on a groundout to make it 10-4 before the Greyhounds' final at bats.
Assumption made a final attempt in the ninth but again could only muster up one run as the Hawks finished the weekend series with a 10-5 victory to secure the season series sweep.
