Women’s Ice Hockey Defeats Assumption, 2-1, Punches Ticket to NEWHA Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. – Behind a two-goal performance from senior captain Brooklyn Schneiderhan and a 44-save outing in net from freshman Kayla Czukoski, the third-seeded Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team took down No. 2 Assumption University in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance Semifinal showdown on Wednesday afternoon at the Worcester Ice Center.

With the victory, the Hawks earned a trip back to the NEWHA Championship game for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

Highlights

  • Schneiderhan scored the eventual game-winning goal after recording the contest's opening tally to move to 25 goals for the season. She now sits one goal off the program's single season goal-scoring record.
  • Sophomores Kismet Dogan and Lucy DeCoteau assisted on the game-winning goal.
  • Czukoski stood tall making 44 saves on 45 shots, earning her third consecutive postseason victory.
  • Saint Anselm improved to 9-3-1 in the all-time series with Assumption. The Hawks won the season series with a 3-2-0 record in meetings in 2025-26.
  • The Hawks snapped a six-game road losing streak with the victory.
  • Saint Anselm advanced to the NEWHA title game for a league-best sixth time (2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2025-26) and for the first time under the direction of second year head coach Sam Ftorek '98.

How it Happened

Schneiderhan converted on a breakaway chance 9:10 into the first period to put the Hawks in front, 1-0. Assumption struck 6:34 into the second period as Ava McGaffigan lit the lamp to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Hawks took their one-goal advantage back just 27 seconds into the third as Schneiderhan found the back of the net on a snapshot from the slot. Czukoski went on to make 18 saves over the remaining 19:33 of action, including 11 stops in the final six minutes, to send Saint Anselm to its first championship appearance in three seasons.
