NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College softball team traded wins in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at Pelz Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University, falling 12-2 in six innings in the first game, before winning the second game, 6-3, on Friday.
Game 1: Southern Conn. St. 12 (9-6, 2-3 NE10), Saint Anselm 2 (10-11, 2-3 NE10) - 6 inn.
Highlights
- Junior Madeline Trisket had a single and a run batted in, while sophomore Zaynah Wotkowicz went 1-2 with a double and a run scored.
- Senior Brooke Tardugno scored once and picked up her 17th stolen base of the season on her 17th attempt.
- Senior Rose Reitmeyer had the only other hit of the game for the Hawks, and sophomore Alexa Salafia started in the circle, falling to 1-4 on the season after giving up five runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
How it Happened
Four of the first five batters reached base for the Owls in the top of the first as they scored three runs in the opening frame. A two-run homer in the second put SCSU ahead by five, and the lead increased to seven after a two-run single in the third.
Saint Anselm got on the board in the bottom of the third, with Trisket tacking on a run with an RBI single, followed by another single from Reitmeyer that drove in Tardugno as the Hawks trailed 7-2.
Southern Connecticut scored five more runs in the fourth and would win the game in six innings, 12-2.
Game 2: Saint Anselm 6 (11-11, 3-3 NE10), Southern Conn. St. 3 (9-7, 2-4 NE10)
Highlights
- Saint Anselm improves to 21-18 all-time against Southern Connecticut State as the Hawks improve to 11-11 on the year with a 3-3 mark in NE10 play.
- Junior Mackenzie Bergen started game two for the Hawks, going 6.2 innings as she earned her third straight win, improving to 4-1 on the year after allowing three earned runs.
- Junior Kendra Lee picked up her second career save and first of the season, recording the final out of the game with a strikeout.
- Tardugno went 2-4 with a double, two runs scored, two runs batted in, and two stolen bases in the win.
- Tardugno moved into sixth all-time in a single season as she is now 19-19 on stolen bases this season, also the second-most consecutive stolen bases to start a season by a Hawk (26 - Audrey Arsenault '25).
- Salafia went 2-3 with a double and a single, while Wotkowicz hit her first career triple, going 1-3.
- Sophomore Alyssa Adams reached base safely twice, going 1-2 with a single, a walk, and a run scored.
- Reitmeyer tallied a single, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored in four plate appearances.
How it Happened
Southern Connecticut State scored the first run of the game in the top of the second after a trio of singles as the Owls led 1-0. The Hawks scored two runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third, as Tardugno and Reitmeyer reached base, followed by an error from the Owls' shortstop that allowed both runners to score.
Wotkowicz led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, and freshman
Madeline Kish took her place on third, scoring on an error by the pitcher later in the frame. A two-RBI double from Tardugno made it 5-1, and Reitmeyer drove in the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly as Saint Anselm led 6-1 going into the fifth.
SCSU chipped away at the Hawks' lead, scoring once in the sixth and once more in the seventh, eventually loading the bases with two outs in the top half of the final inning. With the tying run on first, Lee entered the game in relief for Bergen and struck out the final batter to record the save and secure the 6-3 win for the Hawks.
