RINDGE, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College softball team fell, 8-6 and 9-7 in a pair of high-scoring Northeast 10 Conference matchups as the Hawks hosted Southern Connecticut State University at Melissa Bisaccia Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University on Sunday.
Game 1: Southern Conn. St. 8 (10-7, 3-4 NE10), Saint Anselm 6 (11-12, 3-4 NE10)
Highlights
- Junior Abby Wrinn recorded her first 3+ hit game of the season, and the fifth of her career, going 3-4 with three singles and a run scored.
- Senior Rose Reitmeyer had a 2-4 performance at the plate, leading the Hawks with two runs batted in and a run scored.
- Sophomore Zaynah Wotkowicz went 2-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI, while junior Caitlyn Duquette also had a double, going 2-4.
- Junior Brooke Tardugno reached base twice, recording a single, a walk, a run scored, an RBI, and her 20th stolen base of the season.
- Junior Kendra Lee dropped to 5-5 in the circle, pitching the first five innings of the game, giving up eight hits and five earned runs with a strikeout.
- Sophomore Alexa Salafia pitched the final two innings for the Hawks, keeping the Owls hitless and scoreless with one strikeout.
How it Happened
The Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, launching a home run to left field with runners on first and second. SCSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the second as the Owls led 6-0.
The Hawks answered with two runs in the bottom of the second after a single from Wrinn, followed by an RBI double from Wotkowicz and a groundout from Daigneault that drove her in later in the inning.
Southern Connecticut State rattled off back-to-back doubles in the third to tally a run in the inning, followed by another run in the fifth as the Owls led 8-2. Reitmeyer plated a run in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single as the Saint Anselm deficit shrank to five, 8-3.
The Hawks put together a strong comeback attempt in the seventh, scoring three runs before the Owls could record an out, thanks to a double from Tardugno and singles from Reitmeyer and Duquette.
A fielder's choice to first drove in one more run to make the score 8-6, but Southern Connecticut State staved off the comeback, recording a double play for the final two outs to come away with the victory.
Game 2: Southern Conn. St. 9 (11-7, 4-4 NE10), Saint Anselm 7 (11-13, 3-5 NE10)
Highlights
- Saint Anselm falls to 21-20 all-time against Southern Connecticut State as the Hawks drop to 11-13 on the year with a 3-5 mark in NE10 play.
- Retimeyer had another two-hit performance with a triple and a double, leading the team again with three runs batted in as she recorded her 100th career base hit.
- Tardugno and Wrinn also had two-hit days, with Tardugno tacking on two doubles as she now leads the team with eight this season. Tardugno scored twice and drove in a run, while Wrinn had one RBI and one run scored.
- Sophomore Katie Fox went 1-2 with a double, two walks drawn, a run batted in, a run scored, and a stolen base.
- Junior Madeline Trisket reached base twice, tallying a double, a walk, a run batted in, and a run scored.
- Junior Mackenzie Bergen started game two for the Hawks, pitching the first five innings, allowing 13 hits and six earned runs while striking out two.
- Salafia pitched the final two innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs as she fell to 1-5 on the season.
How it Happened
The Owls had another quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning, but the Hawks had a quick response as Tardugno led off the bottom of the first with a double, and Reitmeyer drove her with a triple to make it 2-1. Fox drove in Reitmeyer with a double to tie the score at 2-2.
Both teams scored two more runs in the second, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back doubles from Trisket, Tardugno, and Reitmeyer, making the score 4-4. After Fox walked and stole second, Wrinn broke the tie with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead in the third.
Saint Anselm added two more runs in the third after the SCSU pitcher walked in both runs with the bases loaded. The Owls had four hits in the top of the fourth, trimming the Hawks' lead down to one, 7-6.
With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, SCSU had a bases-clearing double to take an 8-7 lead late in the game. The Owls added another run in the seventh, and Saint Anselm was unable to capitalize with runners on base in the sixth and seventh, falling to Southern Connecticut, 9-7.
