COLCHESTER, Vt. – The No. 22 Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team used a 13-goal second half to pull away from Saint Michael's College in a Northeast 10 Conference meeting at Duffy Field on Wednesday evening as the Hawks cruised to a 17-8 victory.
Highlights
- Juniors Lucy Mawn sophomore Ayla McDermod, and freshman Kendall Herrick each scored hat tricks as they led all Saint Anselm players, along with junior Alyssa Hill, with four points.
- Junior Julia Rowley had a hat trick as she scored three times on six shots on goal, and added one ground ball and one draw control in the victory.
- Mawn led the way with seven draw controls to go along with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
- McDermod was credited with two caused turnovers, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.
- Herrick was responsible for two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Hill caused three turnovers while firing a team-high nine shots towards target. Offensively, she contributed a pair of goals and assists.
- Senior Brianna Fruci and freshman Ariana Nikolis both contributed two points on one-goal, one-assist performances.
- Sophomore Devan Spinale rounded out the scoring with one goal as she registered a team-high six ground balls.
- Senior Julia Marsden recorded a team-best four caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls.
- Freshman Grace Howard notched three ground balls.
- Senior Elyse Scales posted two ground balls, one caused turnover, and one draw control.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Aiko Fujita made nine saves in the victory.
- Saint Anselm put 30 shots on goal, double what the Purple Knights would log over 60 minutes of action.
- Saint Michael's turned the ball over 23 times, 10 more than the Hawks.
- Saint Anselm went 17-for-20 (85.0%) on clears while limiting the Purple Knights to a 10-for-19 (52.6%) showing.
- Despite losing the draw control battle, 16-11, Saint Anselm was able to scoop 25 ground balls to Saint Michael's 15.
- The Hawks have now won nine consecutive matchups against the Purple Knights dating back to the 2018 seasons, with three of those triumphs coming at Duffy Field.
How it Happened
Tied 3-3 after the first quarter, the Purple Knights scored 5:06 into the second quarter on a goal scored by Layne Doherty to give Saint Michael's its first lead. With under a minute remaining before halftime, Mawn would find the back of the net on an assist from Nikolis to tie the game at 4-4.
Saint Michael's regained its one-goal edge 1:31 into the second half as Doherty scored her second of the game. Rowley and McDermod responded with goals coming in a 35 second span to put the Hawks back in front, 6-5, with 11:23 left in the frame. The game would knot back up just 18 seconds later as Ginnie Hamilton of Saint Michael's responded with an unassisted tally.
Saint Anselm produced a three-goal surge as Mawn, Hill, and Herrick each found the back of the net in a span of 1:35 to put the Hawks up 9-6. After another Hamilton goal cut the Purple Knights' deficit to two goals, Saint Anselm closed out the third quarter with goals from Mawn and Nikolis to give Saint Anselm its largest lead of the game with 15 minutes to play.
Saint Anselm continued its scoring streak in the fourth quarter, scoring four consecutive goals to make it 15-7 with 6:09 to play. The Hawks would tack on two additional goals in the final 2:07 to close the victory out.
