Reitmeyer, Bergen Shine in Comeback Win as Softball Splits NE10 Opener at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Saint Anselm College softball team opened its Northeast 10 Conference slate with a doubleheader at Marois Field at Assumption University, falling 7-1 in the first game, before coming back with three unanswered runs in the seventh of the second game to win 4-3 on Saturday.

Game 1: Assumption 7, Saint Anselm 1

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm drops to 43-55 all-time against Assumption, and the Hawks fall to 8-9 on the year with a 0-1 mark in NE10 play.
  • Senior Brooke Tardugno went 2-3 with a double, a single, and a run batted in.
  • Senior Rose Reitmeyer and junior Madeline Trisket had the only other two hits for the Hawks, with Trisket scoring the lone run in the game for Saint Anselm.
  • Junior Kendra Lee got the start in the circle for Saint Anselm, falling to 5-4 this year, allowing five runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia pitched the final two innings for the Hawks, giving up two hits and one earned run.
How it Happened
Assumption got on the board in the bottom of the first after an inside-the-park home run that made the score 1-0. The Greyhounds added one run to their lead in the second on an error in the infield that led to the baserunner scoring from second to make it 2-0.

Tardugno got the Hawks in the scoring column with an RBI double on a ball hit sharply to right, as she successfully stretched what should have been a single into two bases, making the score 2-1.

It was all Assumption for the remainder of the game, as the Greyhounds scored five unanswered runs to win the NE10 opener, 7-1.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 4, Assumption 3

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm improves to 44-55 all-time against Assumption as the Hawks ended a three-game losing streak to the Greyhounds.
  • The Hawks improve to 9-9 on the year with a 1-1 mark in NE10 play.
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen started game two for the Hawks, pitching all seven innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs, as her record improves to 2-1 on the season, with this being her second complete game as a Hawk.
  • Reitmeyer launched her league-leading seventh home run of the season, driving in three more runs for a team-high 17 batted in this year.
  • Salafia had another solid outing at the plate, going 2-4 with a pair of singles, a run batted in, and a stolen base.
  • Trisket also continued her strong play from the first game to the second, going 1-2 with a single, a walk drawn, a stolen base, and two runs scored.
  • Tardugno was hitless but drew a walk, scored, and stole her 15th straight base to start the season without getting caught.
How it Happened
With Bergen dominating in the circle, along with her counterpart in the circle for Assumption, neither team scored through four innings of play.

The Hawks struck first in the top of the fifth, and with runners on the corners and just one out, Salafia laid down a perfect bunt, reaching on a single while driving in the runner from third to make it 1-0.

The Greyhounds answered with an RBI bunt single to the pitcher as their base runner on third rushed in, tying the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Assumption added a second run in the fifth on a double steal attempt with runners on the corners, as both ended up safe as the Greyhounds went ahead 2-1.

Assumption hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth, with the run eventually scoring on a wild pitch as the Greyhounds' lead grew to 3-1. Trisket led off the seventh with a walk and a stolen base to put pressure on the Greyhounds, and Tardugno also drew a walk, leading to an Assumption pitching change.

With two on and no outs, Reitmeyer stepped up to the plate and lifted a homer to left field to plate three runs and give Saint Anselm a 4-3 lead. Bergen closed out the win with her second complete game of the season as the Hawks held on to win, 4-3.
