Lee Hurls Second Consecutive Complete Game on Day Two of The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  – Junior Kendra Lee hurled another complete game in a 2-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State as the Saint Anselm College Softball team split Monday's doubleheader, falling to Sioux Falls, 5-0, earlier in the day as the Hawks improve to 3-1 to begin the Alyssa Williamson era, at the DiamondPlex Softball Complex on the second day of The Spring Games.

Game 1: Sioux Falls 5, Saint Anselm 0

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm falls to 0-2 all-time against the University of Sioux Falls.
  • Junior Brooke Tardugno had the lone two hits for the Hawks, going 2-3 with two singles and two stolen bases.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia started in the circle, picking up the loss despite going two innings without giving up an unearned run, allowing one hit, one run, and three walks.
How it Happened
Sioux Falls scored its first run of the game on a field error in the bottom of the second, before tacking on three more runs in the third, stringing together three singles and a pair of walks in the inning as the Cougars led, 4-0.

Tardugno reached scoring position with no outs in the top of the fourth but was unable to score, and Sioux Falls added one more run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly, which would end up as the final run, as the Cougars won, 5-0.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 2, Southwest Minnesota State 1

Highlights
  • This was the first all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Southwest Minnesota State, as the Hawks improved to 1-0.
  • Lee recorded a complete game win for the second day in a row, the third of her career, hurling seven innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, with two walks and a strikeout as she is now 2-0 on the season.
  • Junior Sarah Cipriani tallied her first hit of the season, driving in both runs, her first runs batted in of the season.
  • Salafia and senior Rose Reitmeyer also recorded hits in the win, while Tardugno and sophomore Katie Fox reached base on walks drawn.
  • Tardugno recorded another steal, improving to 5-5 on steal attempts this season.
How it Happened
All three runs came in the first inning, with Southwest Minnesota State getting on the board in the top half of the first after a single, a walk, and a fielder's choice. The Hawks responded in the next half inning, with back-to-back singles and a walk drawn to load the bases, followed by a single with the bases juiced from Cipriani that plated Salafia and Reitmeyer.

Both teams had a runner on third in the second inning, but both squads were unable to move the runner the final 60 feet, as the score remained 2-1. Lee was unable to leave a runner stranded on third base in the third and fourth innings as well, as solid pitching and fielding from the Hawks kept the Mustangs off the board.

After making quick work of SMSU in the fifth and sixth, the Mustangs had the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh, but the Hawks came through with the final out, as Lee forced a flyout to freshman Madeline Kish in center field, who secured the catch and the win, 2-1.
