Softball Closes Out The Spring Games with 11-2 Win Over Seton Hill

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  – The Saint Anselm College softball team split Tuesday's doubleheader, losing 8-1 to Slippery Rock before defeating Seton Hill 11-2 at the DiamondPlex Softball Complex on the third and final day of The Spring Games.
 
Game 1: Slippery Rock 8, Saint Anselm 1
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm drops to 7-3 all-time against Slippery Rock, splitting this week's neutral site series.
  • Sophomore Camryn McPhail drove in the Hawks' lone run, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the second inning to bring in junior Caitlyn Duquette, who had the only hit of the contest for Saint Anselm.
  • Freshman Kierra Souphakhot took the loss in the circle, dropping to 1-1 on the season, as she pitched 1.1 innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs.
  • Junior Kendra Lee entered the game in relief in the second innings, going 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with one strikeout.
How it Happened
Slippery Rock jumped on the Hawks early, plating three runs in the first inning on an RBI single and a two-run knock. The Rock extended the lead in the second on a home run to deep left centerfield, and additional run-producing hits to go up 6-0.
 
Saint Anselm loaded the bases in the second inning but only mustered one run on a walk while Slippery Rock added two more in the sixth to seal the 8-1 victory.
 
Game 2: Saint Anselm 11, Seton Hill 2 F/6
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm improves to 4-2 on the season and 3-0 all-time against Seton Hill.
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen is now 1-0 in two starts in the circle, pitching her first complete game as a Hawk, going six innings, allowing six hits, two runs, and two walks while striking out one.
  • Sophomore Katie Fox broke the game open in the sixth with her first career home run and grand slam, the first long ball of the season for the Hawks. Fox finished 1-1 with a home run, three walks drawn, and four runs batted in.
  • Three Hawks rattled off two hits, including senior Rose Reitmeyer, who hit her first double of the season and her third triple.
  • Duquette had a two-hit performance, plating four runs, scoring twice herself, with a double.
  • Junior Abby Wrinn had a double, a single, and scored twice, also drawing a walk and driving in one run.
How it Happened
 
The Hawks got on the board in the second inning when Wrinn scored on a fielder's choice, giving Saint Anselm a 1-0 lead. The Hawks' advantage grew in the third as Duquette drove in Reitmeyer with a fly ball to make it 2-0. In the fourth, an unearned run scored after a Seton Hill error, pushing the score to 3-0.
 
Saint Anselm's offense continued rolling in the fifth, as Duquette doubled in a run and Wrinn followed with an RBI double, stretching the lead to 5-1. In the sixth, Duquette added a two-RBI single, and Fox cleared the bases with a grand slam, sending the Hawks ahead 11-1 before Seton Hill added a run in the bottom of the frame.
 
The final score stayed at 11-2 as the Hawks secured the fourth win of their opening weekend of play.

The Saint Anselm softball team (4-2, 0-0 NE10) will travel to Melbourne, Fla., for the Space Coast Games, beginning Thursday, March 12, against Ursuline at 10 a.m. and Minot State at 12:15 p.m. at the Space Coast Complex.
