MELBOURNE, Fla.  – The Saint Anselm College softball team defeated Mercy University, 3-2, before walking off Northern State University, 6-5, with five unanswered runs in the bottom of the seventh at the Space Coast Complex on Monday.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 3, Mercy 2

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm improves to 6-2 all-time against Mercy, winning six straight over the Mavericks in a series that began in 2009.
  • Junior Kendra Lee hurled her fourth complete game of the season, improving to 4-3 after pitching seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run, striking out a career-high six batters.
  • Junior Caitlyn Duquette had her fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-3 with a run batted in.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia and junior Madeline Trisket both had doubles, with Trisket driving in two runs.
  • Sophomore Katie Fox had a base hit, a stolen base, and a run scored.
How it Happened
Senior Brooke Tardugno led off the game with a walk and stole second, but got doubled up on a pop-up to second. Salafia came through with a two-out double, and Duquette drove her in the very next at bat with a single up the middle to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Mercy answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first, leading off the half inning with a double and a single to even the score, 1-1. After a leadoff walk and a stolen base, the Mavericks were able to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a throwing error by the pitcher.

Fox and freshman Lou Gattuso reached base in the top of the fourth, and Trisket drove in both with a two-out double into the left-centerfield gap as Saint Anselm went up 3-2. Mercy was able to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but Lee and the Hawks were able to escape all three innings unscathed.

Lee set the Mavericks down in order in the seventh to secure the 3-2 win.

  • Salafia pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit to shut out the Wolves for the remainder of the game while adding a strikeout to her tally, improving to 1-2 on the season.
  • Junior Mackenzie Bergen got the start in the circle, pitching the first 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs (three earned).
  • Wrinn had the game-winning hit, driving in three runs on a bases-clearing double with two outs in the seventh, while also drawing a walk in the win.

How it Happened
Tardugno scored the first run of the game, getting on with a leadoff single followed by a stolen base, leading to an RBI single from Duquette to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Northern State loaded the bases in the second, but Bergen fielded a grounder and got out of the jam to keep the Hawks' lead intact. The Wolves got on the board at the top of the third as an infield error allowed the runner on second to score, making the score 1-1.

The bats came alive in the fourth for Northern State, putting together two doubles and three singles as the Wolves tacked on four runs, building a 5-1 edge over the Hawks.

Saint Anselm hit back-to-back singles, and Tardugno was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, still trailing 5-1, with Tournas starting the rally, driving in a run with an RBI single to left. Duquette kept the rally going with another RBI single to make it 5-3, and with two outs in the inning and the bases still loaded, Wrinn played the hero with a bases-clearing double that gave Saint Anselm a 6-5 walkoff win, completing the comeback.
