Softball Starts Season 2-0 with Wins Over Slippery Rock and Dominican (N.Y.)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.  – The Saint Anselm College softball team started its season 2-0, defeating Slippery Rock, 9-0, before downing Dominican (N.Y.), 5-4, at the DiamondPlex Softball Complex on the first day of The Spring Games on Sunday.

Game 1: Saint Anselm 9, Slippery Rock 0

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm improves to 7-2 all-time against Slippery Rock, and head coach Alyssa Williamson tallies her first win at the helm of the program in the Hawks' season opener.
  • Junior Kendra Lee threw her second career complete game, shutting out The Rock, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts and one walk allowed.
  • Five Hawks had multi-hit games, including junior Brooke Tardugno, who went 3-3 with a double, two runs batted in, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk.
  • Senior Rose Reitmeyer led the team with three RBI, two triples, two runs scored, and a walk.
  • Sophomore Alexa Salafia had two singles and two runs scored, classmate Katie Fox had two hits, including a double, while scoring twice, and junior Caitlyn Duquette also had a pair of singles.
How it Happened
Lee and Slippery Rock starter Paige Gresgott had a pitcher's duel going for the first three innings of action, but a two-out double in the top of the fourth by Fox got the offense going for the Hawks, and freshman Haleigh Kelley drove her in with an RBI single the very next at bat.

Reitmeyer brought in another run with a triple in the fifth, and Salafia drove in the third run of the game with a single. After a scoreless sixth, it was all Saint Anselm in the seventh as the Hawks added six more insurance runs, while Lee secured the win with a complete game shutout, closing out the game, 9-0.

Game 2: Saint Anselm 5, Dominican (N.Y.) 4

Highlights
  • Saint Anselm improves to 5-6 against Dominican University, as the Hawks have won the last two meetings.
  • Freshman Kierra Souphakhot came in the game in relief of junior Mackenzie Bergen in the fourth inning, as the duo both made their Hawk debuts on Sunday. Souphakhot improves to 1-0 on the year, allowing two hits, one run, and three walks with a strikeout in four innings.
  • Bergen started the contest, going three innings in the circle, allowing seven hits but just two earned runs with a strikeout.
  • Tardugno continued her strong play from game one into game two, going 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.
  • Duquette drove in two runs to lead Saint Anselm, tallying both on sacrifice flies as she finished the game 1-1 with two RBI.
  • Junior Abby Wrinn recorded her first RBI of the season, and classmate Joelle Daigneault drove in the winning run on a sacrifice bunt in the sixth.
How it Happened

The Chargers got on the board early in the first, as an RBI double with one out gave Dominican a 1-0 lead. With runners on second and third, a Chargers' single drove in two more as Dominican led 3-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.

The Hawks quickly responded as Duquette's first sac fly of the game drove in Tardugno, followed by a sacrifice fly later in the inning by Wrinn that drove in Reitmeyer, who reached on a walk.

Both teams failed to produce any runs for the next three innings, but Tardugno led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, and Reitmeyer drove her in with an RBI single the very next at bat to tie the score at 3-3. Reitmeyer reached third base on the play, and Duquette came through with another sacrifice fly to give Saint Anselm a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth.

An RBI single tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, but after Fox led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, Daigneault laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to drive her in from third base, putting the Hawks in front, 5-4.

Despite the tying run reaching second base in the top of the seventh, Souphakhot was able to get out of it with a popout in foul ground to the catcher, followed by a groundout to the shortstop to secure the Hawks' win.
