Volleyball Falls to Assumption in Five Sets

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team battled to a fifth set against Assumption University on Saturday afternoon but came up short in a 3-2 Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Andrew Laska Gym.

Highlights

  • Senior Sam Pila paced the Hawks with 18 kills and 19 digs, recording a team-high 18 points.
  • Sophomore Mckenna O'Connell dished out 32 assists and added 10 digs.
  • Senior Madeline Burke led Saint Anselm with 18 digs, six asissts, and served three aces.
  • Senior Miia Dembski contributed eight kills, four digs and two service aces.
  • Sophomore Peyton Elward added six kills while hitting .278, along with three solo blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | Assumption established early momentum, opening a 4-0 lead before the Hawks worked to stay within reach. Pila recorded four kills in the opening frame, but the Greyhounds maintained their advantage and claimed the set, 25-18.

SET 2 | Saint Anselm responded with its strongest offensive set of the afternoon, posting 13 kills against just three errors to hit .370. The Hawks built an early advantage and continued to extend the lead, eventually closing out a 25-16 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

SET 3 | Assumption regained control in the third, using a strong offensive performance to take a 25-16 decision. The Greyhounds recorded 13 kills while limiting Saint Anselm to nine, moving ahead two sets to one.

SET 4 | The Hawks answered with a resilient effort to keep the match alive. After trailing late, Saint Anselm battled back from a 23-23 tie and secured the final two points to earn a 26-24 victory. Pila and Elward delivered the set-clinching kills to send the match to a fifth frame.

SET 5 | The deciding set remained competitive, with the teams trading points early. Saint Anselm pulled even at 8-8 after trailing by three, but Assumption responded with a late push to create separation. The Greyhounds closed out the match with a 15-12 win.
