Volleyball Opens NE10 Play, Drops Four-Set Match at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team opened its Northeast 10 Conference schedule on Friday, falling to Southern Connecticut State University in four sets, 3-1, at Pelz Gym.
 
Highlights
  • Senior Sam Pila led the Hawks with 14 kills and added a career-high 21 digs for her team-high 18.5 points.
  • Freshman Riley Campo recorded a career-high 11 kills and 12.5 points.
  • Sophomore Mckenna O'Connell dished out a match-high 36 assists while adding four kills and nine digs.
  • Senior Madeline Burke had nine digs, becoming the 10th Hawk in program history to eclipse the 1,000-dig mark, ranking 10th all-time with 1,004 and counting.
  • Saint Anselm falls to 15-17 all-time against Southern Conn. State.
How it Happened
 
SET 1 | Saint Anselm recovered from an early 10-7 deficit with a six-point run, taking a 13-11 lead. The Hawks continued to build momentum, extending their advantage to 20-16 and eventually closing out the set, 25-17. Saint Anselm recorded 13 kills while hitting .345 in the opening frame.
 
SET 2 | The Hawks opened the second set with a 3-0 lead and maintained a narrow advantage through the early stages. Southern Connecticut State battled back to tie the score at 16-16 before taking control with a three-point run to go ahead 19-16. Saint Anselm stayed within reach late, cutting the deficit to 24-22, but the Owls evened the match with a 25-22 win.
 
SET 3 | Southern Connecticut State took control early in the third set, turning a 6-6 tie into a 13-7 advantage. The Hawks attempted to close the gap, but the Owls continued to build their lead and reached set point at 24-14. Saint Anselm scored once more before Southern Connecticut State secured the 25-15 victory.
 
SET 4 | The fourth set featured 14 tie scores and seven lead changes as the teams traded points throughout. Saint Anselm held a 20-17 advantage late before Southern Connecticut State rallied to tie the set at 22-22. The Hawks reached match point at 24-23, but the Owls answered, and the teams continued to exchange points. Saint Anselm tied the score at 27-27 before Southern Connecticut State claimed the final two points to complete the 29-27 set win.
