Women’s Hockey Topped by Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team fell to Sacred Heart University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action, 5-2, on Friday night at Martire Family Arena.

Highlights

  • Senior captain Brooklyn Schneiderhan scored her fifth shorthanded goal of the season, extending her status as the nation's top scorer on the penalty kill and breaking the Hawks' program record for most in a single season.
  • Junior Hailey Tullo netted her third goal of the season while posting a team-best five shots on goal.
  • Freshman Kayla Lunney and sophomores Justyce Ohlgren and Kismet Dogan registered one assist each.
  • Freshman netminder Kayla Czukoski made 19 stops over the final 39:07 in a relief appearance as Saint Anselm outshot the Pioneers, 37-33.
  • Freshman Avery Wilson blocked a team-high two shots.
  • Sophomore Lucy DeCoteau went 14-for-22 (63.6%) from the faceoff dot.
  • Saint Anselm now sits at 2-1-0 against Sacred Heart in the season series.

How it Happened

Sacred Heart scored 5:23 into the game as Bria Holm recorded her first goal of the game. With under three minutes left in the first frame, Holm scored again to make it a two-goal lead in favor of the Pioneers.

With just five seconds left in the first, Schneiderhan recorded her fifth short-handed goal of the year to cut the Hawks' deficit to one at the intermission.

Holm capped off her hat trick 53 seconds into the second period, scoring on the same penalty as Schneiderhan. After Sacred Heart's lead grew to 4-1, the Hawks got one back as Tullo lit the lamp with 6:07 to play in the second, making it a two-goal margin heading into the break.

Sacred Heart scored the lone goal of the third period on the power play to seal the 5-2 victory.

The Hawks (13-11-1, 13-5-1 NEWHA) will face off against Sacred Heart (6-17-2, 5-12-2 NEWHA) in the weekend series finale on Saturday, Jan. 24 with a 2:00 p.m. puck drop scheduled from Martire Family Arena.
