FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior
Jake McCabe netted the game-tying goal in the 79th minute as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team tied with Queens College, 1-1, at the Varsity Soccer Field Saturday night.
Highlights
- The Hawks are now 4-4-2 all-time against Queens College, as this was the first matchup between the teams since 2018.
- McCabe scored the first goal of the 2025 season for the Hawks as his equalizer in the 79th minute was the first of his career and just the second shot on goal of his career.
- Sophomore Chance Prouty's assist on McCabe's goal was the second of his career.
- Senior goalkeeper David Hood made five saves and allowed one goal in the 1-1 tie as his record moves to 0-0-2 on the year.
- Queens' lone goal came from Miguel Soto Gonzalez in the 33rd minute, with the Knights' goalkeeper, Thanasis Shehadeh, picking up the assist.
How it Happened
After 30 minutes of strong defense on both sides, freshman
Zachary Mantegari recorded the first shot on goal of the game, but it was turned away by Shehadeh.
Queens opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, converting on their first shot on goal of the game when Soto Gonzalez sent a shot to the bottom right corner of the net past the reach of Hood.
Freshman
Max Oelkers made his collegiate debut in the 28th minute and recorded his first shot on net as the goalie had to dive to his left in the 38th minute to keep the Knights in front.
After a lengthy lightning delay, Queens went into the halftime break up 1-0. Prouty had a shot on goal in the 50th minute, but Shehadeh made his third save of the match, holding the Knights' lead at 1-0.
Senior
David Hood made his first save of the game in the 58th minute on a shot up the middle to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
Jake McCabe tied the game in the 79th minute, heading in a beautiful feed off a corner kick from Prouty, netting the first goal of the season for the Hawks.
The Knights nearly pulled off a miracle with four seconds left, but a shot from the left side of the box was secured by Hood, who staved off the scoring chance, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
