Field Hockey Defeats Molloy, 8-0

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm College field hockey team extended its Northeast 10 (NE10) winning streak to three games with a dominant 8-0 victory over Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.

Highlights

  • Seven different Hawks found the back of the net, as freshman Breanna Shorey recorded the first multi-goal game of her career.
  • Junior keeper Mackenzie Wehrum earned her third shutout of the season.
  • The Hawks outshot the Lions 41-0, with 24 shots landing on target.
  • Saint Anselm earned 14 corners, compared to Molloy's one.
  • The Hawks extend their winning streak to six games in the all-time series against the Lions'.

How it Happened

The Hawks set the tone early, recording 11 shots and three penalty corners in the opening period. Freshman Breanna Shorey opened the scoring with 26 seconds left in the period, finishing off of a setup from sophomore Ruby Reid for her first tally of the game.

Just 58 seconds into the second quarter, junior Meghan Smith doubled the Hawks' lead with the only goal of the period to put the Hawks up 2-0 heading into the half.

Sophomore Maggie McCready struck just 43 seconds into the second half on a feed from senior Marissa Politano. Exactly ten minutes later, sophomore Meghan Carey netted her fourth goal of the season off a penalty corner. Sophomore Sophie Smith added another tally with her first goal of the 2025 campaign, with another assist from Reid, making it 5-0 heading into the final quarter.

Shorey scored her second goal of the contest just 25 seconds into the fourth, assisted by senior Maggie Burchill who earned her first assist of the season. Reid added a goal of her own with less than five minutes remaining in the contest, and sophomore Kelly Holmes capped off the scoring in the final two minutes, assisted by sophomore Alexa Garthee, to close out the contest.

The Hawks (6-3, 3-0 NE10) return home to host Saint Michael's (0-8, 0-3 NE10) on Tuesday, Sep. 30 at Grappone Stadium. The game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
