Field Hockey Routs Saint Michael’s in Non-Conference Finale

COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team wrapped up its non-conference slate with an 8-0 victory over Saint Michael's on Wednesday evening at Duffy Field.

How it Happened

Junior Laurentien van den Akker scored her first goal of the season with 4:17 left to play in the first to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage. Just over two minutes later, freshman Breanna Shorey scored the first goal of her collegiate career to make it a two-goal lead in favor of the visitors.

With 3:12 remaining in the half, Saint Anselm increased its lead to three as Kelly Holmes scored following the Hawks' 10th corner opportunity. Sophomore Ruby Reid finished a feed from Holmes as the buzzer sounded to make it 4-0 at the break.

The Hawks started the second half with a pair of goals in the opening 5:33 of action, as junior Meghan Smith and sophomore Leila Härtel scored in the span of 3:04 to put Saint Anselm up by six. Junior Olivia Baran tipped in a feed from sophomore Sophie Smith to increase the Hawks' lead to 7-0 with 6:40 remaining in the frame.

Holmes wrapped up the scoring with her second strike of the contest 1:02 into the final period on a corner try as freshman Bella DiFiore picked up the assist on the insert, marking her first collegiate point.

The Hawks (3-3, 0-0 NE10) will host Pace (1-4, 1-0 ME10) on Saturday, Sep. 20 in its Northeast 10 Conference (NE10) opener. The start time is set for 5:00 p.m. from Grappone Stadium.
