Politano Pushes No. 2 Field Hockey Past Bentley, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – A goal off the stick of senior midfielder Marissa Politano just 2:51 into the second half was enough to send the No. 2 Saint Anselm College field hockey team past Bentley, 2-1, in Wednesday night's non-conference road clash.

The Hawks extended their winning streak to 11 games in the all-time series against the Falcons, which includes six straight wins at the Bentley Field Hockey Field.

Highlights

  • Sophomore midfielder Maggie McCready scored her first collegiate goal just 8:07 into the contest to tie the score.
  • Politano's goal was her second of the season for her 11th career tally.
  • Four shots from Politano, all on target, were a team-high.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Layla Cameron tallied four saves as she logged her first collegiate victory.
  • The Hawks outshot the Falcons, 16-11, with nine shots landing on target.
  • Saint Anselm recorded six penalty corners compared to Bentley's four.

How it Happened

Bentley got on the board first, taking an early lead as Madeline Krepelka got behind the Hawks' defense and buried a feed from Gracie Moore. Saint Anselm tied things up just 4:18 later when sophomore midfielder Maggie McCready buried a loose ball from a few meters out. With a chance to regain its lead on a corner late in the frame, Bentley's offense was denied by freshman goalie Layla Cameron who turned aside a shot from just inside the circle to keep the score level.

Neither side was able to take a lead into halftime despite the Hawks outshooting Bentley, 5-1. With just over three minutes left in the half, Saint Anselm earned a corner after a pair of chances from sophomore midfielder Meghan Carey and freshman forward Bella DiFiore. Senior Millie Forster and Carey each recorded shots off the corner, but neither landed on target.

Senior midfielder Marissa Politano used a second effort to score the eventual game-winning goal 2:51 into the second half as she got her own rebound and scooped a shot over the Bentley keeper to put the Hawks in front for the first time in the contest.

Bentley outshot the visitors, 5-4, in the final quarter of action, but a pair of saves by Cameron, along with a pair of blocked shots, helped keep the Hawks in front to earn their second victory of the young season.
