EUGENE, Ore. – Logging the fastest 400-meter time in the East Region at the Northeast 10 Championship in May, freshman Logan Montgomery (Weare, N.H.) of the Saint Anselm College men's track and field program has earned a spot at the USA U20 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The two-day championships, hosted by the University of Oregon, will begin this Thursday, June 19 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The first round of the 400m begins at 3:46 p.m. Pacific time.
"When I enrolled [at Saint Anselm] in the fall, I expected to be successful due to training year-round and really focusing on track as my only sport," said Montgomery, a two-time NE10 Rookie of the Year (indoor and outdoor) this past season. "However, I never imagined having this level of success this soon."
A former New Hampshire Division II high school state champion at John Stark, Montgomery also claimed silver medals in the 200-meter and 4x400-meter relay at the NE10 Outdoor Championships. During the indoor season, he also won gold in the 400-meter with a time of 47.82.
"I feel like the major things that helped me improve so much this season were taking lifting seriously and really trusting my coaches and my own abilities," said Montgomery. "I never really lifted weights in high school, so coming to college and following a lifting plan, and then seeing the results, told me how important that was."
Montgomery is maintaining a steady mindset as he prepares to depart New Hampshire for the West Coast.
"My mindset going into the meet is really just to focus on my training and lift plan, and stay in shape," said Montgomery. "If I can do that, I'll be able to get the job done. I'm very excited to match up with some of the best guys in the country and make a name for myself."
