WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team stayed hot in their final regular season game against Assumption, extending their win streak to five games. After setting the program record for hits in a single game earlier this season, the Hawks broke another program record on Saturday—this time for runs—exploding for a 24-7 win. Saint Anselm put up 10 runs in the top of the first inning and closed the day with eight more in the ninth to cap a dominant performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Hawks exploded out of the gate with ten runs on nine hits in the opening inning. The scoring started with RBI singles by senior Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) and freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.). Junior Steven Betty (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a two-run single, and sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) added a two-run double. Harris capped off the inning with a three-run homer in his second at-bat, giving Saint Anselm a commanding early lead.

Assumption got one back in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Sal Grinstead.

Saint Anselm added solo home runs in the third and fourth innings—one from freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) and another from fifth-year Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.).

The Greyhounds added a second run in the fourth via a James McDermott double.

The Hawks extended their lead in the fifth and sixth innings. Slauson drove in Powers with a groundout, and senior Jax Budgell (Newburyport, Mass.) singled in Dow to make it 14-2.

Assumption responded with three runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Max Lefrancois and Jack Barry, and a sac fly from Cody Smith, cutting the deficit to 14-5.

Both teams scored twice in the seventh. Saint Anselm's runs came on an RBI groundout from Betty, scoring Slauson, and a balk that allowed sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) to score. Assumption responded with an RBI single from Will Panza and a run on a wild pitch.

The Hawks closed out the game with an eight-run ninth inning. Three runs scored on errors, one on a wild pitch, and one on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded drawn by Slauson. Brune added a sac fly, while Bourdeau and Betty chipped in with RBI singles to cap off a dominant 24-7 win and complete the three-game sweep over Assumption to end the regular season.

The 136th meeting between Assumption and Saint Anselm marked the Hawks' third win in two days and improved their record in the all-time series to 55-81-1. It was their fifth straight win over the Greyhounds, tied for the third-longest streak in program history.

The combined 31 runs were the most in the series since an 18-14 Assumption win in 2003.

Saint Anselm set a new program record with 24 runs, surpassing the previous mark of 23 set in 2021. They also tallied the second-most at-bats in a game (54), tied for the fifth-most hits (21), and posted the fourth-most RBI in a single game (18).

Sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau went five-for-seven, becoming just the ninth player in program history with five hits in a game. He also scored three runs and drove in three. His 47 runs this season lead the team and rank third-most in a single season in program history.

Before this game, only three players in program history had logged seven at-bats in a single game. In this single game, Bourdeau, Jackson Powers, and Brenden Harris all had seven at-bats in the win.

Powers notched three hits and scored four runs— the four runs matching the most by a Hawk in a single game.

Harris had four hits and four RBI, scoring three times, all matching or exceeding his career bests.
