WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team swept their final doubleheader of the regular season at Assumption, clinching a spot in the Northeast-10 (NE10) playoffs. Riding a four-game win streak, the Hawks have turned their season around just in time for the postseason. In game one, freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) powered the offense with two home runs in a 5-3 victory. Game two was a complete team effort, as Saint Anselm executed in all phases en route to a 7-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):

The Hawks struck first in the top of the first, as senior Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) led off with a single to notch the game's opening hit. He came around to score when freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) launched a two-run home run over the right field wall.

Assumption answered in the bottom half, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on an RBI single by Sal Grinstead.

Both offenses went quiet for several innings until the Greyhounds broke through in the fifth, tying the game at 2-2 on a groundout by Jack Barry that brought home Eric Giarnese.

Saint Anselm shifted momentum in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) reached on a hit-by-pitch and Harris followed with a walk. That set the stage for Slauson, who lived up to the No. 34 on his back by smashing his second home run of the game—another shot to right—for a clutch three-run blast that gave the Hawks a 5-2 lead.

Assumption trimmed the deficit in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run off the bat of Chris Klein, making it a 5-3 game.

Freshman Jake Schoenberg (Holliston, Mass.) took care of the rest, shutting the door in the ninth to lock up both the win on the mound and a 5-3 victory for the Hawks in game one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE):

This was the 135th meeting between Assumption and Saint Anselm, with the Hawks moving to 53-81-1 in the all-time series. This was their third straight win over the Greyhounds.

Sophomore Caden Smith (Lowell, Mass.) started the game, pitching the first five innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

Jake Schoenberg earned his first career win, finishing the last four innings with only three hits and a single earned run, striking out five hitters.

George Slauson was responsible for all five runs on his two homers. He leads the team with 10 home runs and 40 RBI this season. He is now tied for the fifth-most homers in a single season in team history, also tying for seventh best in RBI in a single season.

Brenden Harris continued his strong stretch at the plate, now batting seven-for-thirteen in his last three games, good for an average of .538.

Once again, the Hawks struck quickly in the top of the first, using an RBI groundout from freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) to bring home sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) for the game's opening run.

Saint Anselm tacked on two more in the second. A double by junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg, Vt.) scored sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.), and Howrigan later came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Assumption answered in the bottom half with a leadoff home run by Sal Grinstead, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Greyhounds completed the comeback an inning later, tying the game at 3-3 with a two-RBI double from Jamison Howland.

After two scoreless frames, Saint Anselm regained the lead in the sixth. With two outs, Howrigan singled and came around to score on a double by Bourdeau.

The Hawks added insurance in the seventh when freshman Peter Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.) launched a solo homer over the right field wall.

They plated two more in the eighth, capitalizing on an Assumption error. Sophomore Matteo Cubello (Bethlehem, N.Y.) led off with a single and scored on the miscue, and Bourdeau came home on a single by freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) to make it 7-3.

Senior Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) closed it out, tossing the final three innings to earn the save and secure the doubleheader sweep for Saint Anselm with a 7-3 victory in game two.

Senior Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) picked up the save, throwing three scoreless innings to close out the game. He gave up just one hit and two walks while striking out four.
