Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Battle vs. SNHU

MANCHESTER, NH – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a high-scoring road contest to Southern New Hampshire (SNHU) in a back-and-forth affair on Wednesday. With the score knotted at 11 in the final frame, SNHU delivered the game-winning hit to secure a 12-11 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Saint Anselm struck first in the top of the first inning as senior Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) delivered a two-run single that scored sophomores Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) and Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.). The Hawks added another run in the inning when junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) came home on a wild pitch that made it 3-0.
  • SNHU responded in the bottom half, beginning with an RBI single by Jancarlos Colon, followed by an RBI double from Jake Risedorf. Nater Wachter then launched a two-run home run over the right field wall to give the Penmen the lead. One batter later, Jackson Marshall added a solo shot to make it 5-3.
  • The Hawks got the bats going once again and reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning. Freshman Peter Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.) brought a run home on a sacrifice fly, and sophomore Tyler Sears (Brunswick, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Gonzalez gave Saint Anselm the lead with an RBI single of his own, while, freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) added two more runs with a base hit. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) capped off the six-run inning, giving the Hawks a 9-5 advantage.
  • The Penmen quickly answered in the bottom of the frame. A bases-loaded walk to Marshall was followed by a two-run double from Jake Pisano, and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Burgos tied the game at 9-9.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Risedorf and Wachter each tallied RBI singles that put the Penmen back in front, 11-9.
  • After a leadoff walk by Bourdeau in the sixth, McCarron evened the game again with a two-run home run, making it 11-11.
  • The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when SNHU walked it off on a double by Kyle Lavigne that scored Luca Giallongo and gave the Penmen a 12-11 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm scored 11 runs on 11 hits and five walks while leaving six runners on base. They had a clean game in the field with no errors.
  • Southern New Hampshire scored 12 runs on 12 hits and eight walks while leaving seven runners on base. They committed two errors in the field.
  • Cam Varney earned the win on the mound for the Penmen. He struck out three batters in the final 3.1 innings while allowing just one hit and two walks. Both of his wins this season have come against the Hawks.
  • Sophomore Andrew Chenevert (Dracut, Mass.) started on the bump for the Hawks. He tossed 3.0 innings and allowed five hits, three walks, and five earned runs while punching out four batters.
  • Freshman Gabe Knudson (Hanover, Mass.) delivered two perfect innings out of the bullpen for Saint Anselm, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
  • McCarron launched his fourth home run of the season for the Hawks and led the team with three RBIs in the game. He now sits atop the team leaderboard with 21 RBIs on the year.
  • Bourdeau crossed the plate three times for Saint Anselm, pacing the team in runs. He also leads the Hawks on the season with 19 runs scored.
  • Gonzalez notched two hits, two runs, and an RBI, boosting his team-best batting average to .371 — currently the second-best figure in the NE10. He also leads the Hawks with 36 hits on the year.
  • Harris also had a solid performance at the plate for Saint Anselm, going 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
  • Sears recorded his first career hit and first career RBI in the game with his RBI single in the fourth inning. 
  • This marked the 106th all-time meeting between the two programs. SNHU improved to 71-35 in the series that began in 1982.
