MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to New Haven, as the Chargers used late rallies to complete a pair of comeback wins. In game one, the Hawks held a 3-1 lead before New Haven scored eight runs across the sixth and seventh innings to pull away for a 9-3 victory. In game two, Saint Anselm led 5-3 before a four-run sixth inning lifted the Chargers to a 7-5 win and the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):

The Chargers struck first in the third inning, as a single by Joseph Frazzetta brought home Kenneth Franquiz for the game's opening run.

The Hawks answered in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with a towering home run over the left field wall by senior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.). Just two batters later, sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) followed with a solo shot of his own to make it back-to-back homers and give Saint Anselm a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks added to their lead in the fifth inning when a grounder by sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) scored freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.), pushing the lead to 3-1.

New Haven tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single by Robert Taylor and an RBI double by Franquiz.

The Chargers then broke the game open in the seventh inning, beginning with a two-RBI double by Taylor. Casey Cerruto followed with a three-run home run, and Franquiz made back-to-back long balls with a solo shot to extend the lead to 9-3.

Both teams were held hitless over the final two and a half innings, as New Haven secured the 9-3 victory in game one.

This marked the 20th all-time meeting between the two programs, with New Haven improving to 17-4 in the series.

Vincent Fusco earned the win for the Chargers, tossing six innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs, striking out six.

After a hit-by-pitch and a walk, the Chargers struck first in dramatic fashion as Cole Marcere cleared the bases with a three-run homer over the right field wall to open the scoring in game two.

The Hawks answered in the third inning. Freshman Luke Douglas (Bellingham, Mass.) led off with a single, and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Alex Razzaboni (Brookline, N.H.) drove in Douglas with a single before freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) followed with another base hit to score two more. Freshman Xavier Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, V.T.) each added RBI singles, capping off a five-run inning for Saint Anselm.

New Haven responded in the sixth, beginning with a fielder's choice that scored Mike Christian. Another fielder's choice brought home Jake Russo, followed by a sacrifice fly from Robert Taylor to plate Nick Ungania. A single from Casey Cerruto then scored Cam McGugan to give the Chargers a 7-5 lead.

Saint Anselm loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't bring a runner home, ultimately falling 7-5 in the seven-inning contest.
