Baseball Lets Game One Slip, Can't Recover in Game Two Against SCSU

MANCHESTER, NH – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Southern Connecticut State (SCSU) in their final meeting with the Owls this season. The first game was all Hawks through the first eight innings before an 11-run ninth inning forced the game into extras. The Owls were able to capitalize on their new life, winning 15-14 after ten innings. Game two was a pitcher's duel, with SCSU able to silence the bats of the Hawks, ultimately winning 3-1 in the seven-inning game.

  • Saint Anselm struck first in the bottom of the first, starting with a leadoff double by sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.), who would score the opening run off a sacrifice fly from freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.). The Hawks put another runner in scoring position quickly with another double from sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.), who would score off a double from sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.), the third of the inning, to put Saint Anselm up 2-0 after one.

  • Freshman Luke Douglas (Bellingham, Mass.) continued to add collegiate firsts since his debut in mid-April, this time with a home run down the left field line that reached the pavement to make it a 3-0 game.

  • The Hawks made it three straight innings with a run in the third, starting with an RBI single by freshman Peter Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.), scoring McCarron for the fourth run of the game, before a wild pitch brought home sophomore Matteo Cubello (Bethlehem, N.Y.). Saint Anselm doubled their lead with an RBI single by Powers, scoring Fischer to end the inning at 6-0.

  • Saint Anselm nearly doubled their lead again in the fifth, scoring five runs off hits in three consecutive at-bats. It started with RBI singles from Powers and Gonzalez before a three-run home run by freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) blew the game open, 11-0.

  • The scoring resumed in the sixth for Saint Anselm, with Cubello again coming around to score, this time off an RBI single by Fischer.

  • Southern Connecticut got on the board for the first time in the top of the seventh, scoring a run off a single from Spencer Chard, with another run scoring on the play as the throw from the outfield deflected out of play.

  • The Hawks added another run in the bottom of the inning, with a single by Cubello scoring Gonzalez to extend the lead to 13-2.
