Baseball Splits Series Finale with Bentley Behind Douglas’ Five-RBI Performance

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team closed out its series against Bentley with a non-conference win in game two to split Monday's doubleheader. Game one turned into a high-scoring slugfest as a 10-run eighth inning by the Falcons put the game out of reach in a 21-10 loss for the Hawks. The bats stayed hot in game two, but this time it was Saint Anselm doing the majority of the damage, scoring five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for a 15-7 win in the seven-inning game. Freshman Luke Douglas (Bellingham, Mass.) led the Hawks in game two by going 2-2 at the plate with career-highs of five RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
  • Bentley picked up right where they left off on Saturday in the top of the first inning. David VanderZouwen led off the game with a double and came around to score when Stan DeMartinis III crushed a two-out, two run homer to give the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.
  • Saint Anselm responded immediately in the bottom half of the first. Sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) crushed the first pitch he saw deep into the rocks in left center field for a solo home run.
  • Sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) followed with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) that tied the game at 2-2.
  • Bentley reclaimed the lead in the top of the second with an RBI single by VanderZouwen and an RBI double by Brendan Sencaj, making it 4-2.
  • After a quiet stretch, the Falcons added to their lead in the top of the fifth courtesy of a solo home run by Nick Pappas.
  • Two more home runs followed in the sixth — a leadoff blast by Tommy Goonan and a two-run shot from the nine-hole hitter, Parker Coleman — stretching the lead to 8-2 for the visitors.
  • Saint Anselm reignited its offense in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases and adding two runs on a double by sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.). Freshman Peter Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.) later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half, making it an 8-5 game.
  • Bentley took advantage of a seventh-inning error to plate two more runs — one via a double play, the other on a Curt Heath single — pushing the lead to 10-5.
  • The Hawks again punched back in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) launched a leadoff homer over the left field wall. Fischer then singled home McCarron, and sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) scored on a passed ball to bring Saint Anselm within two runs with the score at 10-8.
  • After that came a high-scoring eighth inning as Bentley exploded for 10 runs on six hits, including three home runs. DeMartinis, Coleman, and Sencaj all went deep for the Falcons, combining to drive in eight runs. Heath later tacked on a two-run single that made it 20-8.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, McCarron brought Gonzalez home with a sacrifice fly for Saint Anselm, cutting the deficit to 20-9.
  • Bentley kept the scoring streak alive in the ninth with an RBI single from VanderZouwen to put their run total at 21 for the game.
  • Saint Anselm answered with one last run as senior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) led off the bottom of the ninth with a towering solo shot down the left field line, but that would be all for the Hawks, who fell by a final score of 21-10.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE):

  • Junior Nolan Mederos (Nashua, N.H.) tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Hawks, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one.
  • Brune led the offense for Saint Anselm with a four-hit day, scoring twice. He became just the second Hawk this season to tally four hits in a single game, joining Gonzalez.
  • Powers recorded his second straight three-hit game and his fourth of the season, going 3-6 at the plate.
  • Bourdeau, Powers, and Scolaro each launched their third home run of the year, keeping them in a three-way tie for third on the team in long balls. Scolaro led the team with three RBIs and went 2-4 in game one.
